In New York? Do some touristy stuff. Start out with a great, early breakfast somewhere fun and old-school. Zabar's? Maybe even forget brunch, go to the farmer's market, pick up some nice stuff, a bottle of wine, take it to the boats at Central Park. Go boating. Maybe take a nap on Sheep's Meadow, go see an off-Broadway show or get some rush tickets, OR just ride down to the Staten Island Ferry. Get some beers, take it across, take it back. If you haven't already napped, nap. If you haven't already seen a matinee, go see a concert at the Bowery Ballroom of a band you really like. Catch a later dinner somewhere nice, fun, open late: Pulino's, Momofuku, etc. But spend most of your money getting stupid drunk with someone you love and/or maybe are "with." Or if you got drunk and are at this concert, go home, put on Van Morrison, dance, order a pizza. I don't know. Every day in New York you get to do any of those things is kind of a perfect day, but too much in one day is just kinda exhausting, and also, who has ever planned and then executed the perfect day? They kind of just happen. Forced to have intent, I'd rather just scatter the perfect moments around a week or two.

Ha. Funny you say that. I haven't, but I know people who have. Just diminish your expectations of what someone will actually be like "I ARE EL" by like, 32%, and if they exceed it, nice. But that's an important number to keep in mind.

You're afraid that you're not sure of a love there is no cure for.

I always ended up choosing BlackBook over Gawker, mostly because Chris Mohney is basically the most legit boss you can have in New York City. The allure and fun of Gawker's tough competition for any job, though.

The question before this one was "How did you hear about the opening at Village Voice? Was it from crowdsourcing?" So obviously someone's a little bitter? Dude, the Voice came to me. I didn't go to them. True story. The last job I went after was with BlackBook. I got it. By the way: Fuck you.

Because you didn't live in Las Vegas or go to Jewish summer camp in Georgia, about three hours up the 400 from Atlanta.

Mostly, to stay flexible.

Thanks, Dad. No. Not until at least half of our family's dead. Because the book will inevitably give the rest of them coronaries and/or aneurysms. Actually, I have no idea what the hell I'd put in a book. What writing of mine (and most bloggers) deserves the permanence and dignity of a book? None I'm aware of. I'd like to write a travel book where someone gives me a lot of money to go away. That'd be great. But really, I just don't have anything important to say, and I'm pretty okay with that. I wish more people would come to terms with this reality, but, whatever. Let 'em have their books.

I brought it back and nobody used it. : (

Without noting anybody on the masthead right now, and in the order that they came to mind, and without noting anybody else from any of the other blogs including Defamer pre-merge, with Lisanti being first blogger I read, even though it obviously goes without saying "Mark Graham, too, and hey, do you remember when Defamer had two Molly-people on the masthead? Nuts!" it goes something like:
Coen,
Balk,
Sicha II,
Oxfeld,
Sheila,
Shafrir,
Spiegelman,
Cajun,
Denton,
Gould,
Shnayerson,
Stein.
Special Awards:
Favorite Character of Tenure:
Richard Morgan - Quit Gawker after One Day on Masthead.
Favorite Fiasco Maker:
Nick Douglas - Posted a picture of a giant dildo on the landing page. NICE.
Favorite Guest Editor:
Krucoff - Obviously.
Favorite Intern:
Mary - Obviously. Remember when Gawker Interns had bylines? Also, Alexis, who created Altarcations, I do believe.
Favorite Important Person In This Situation:
Spiers - Note that Spiers did not make my list! This is because I started reading in early 2005, which I believe was the Era of Coen. But Spiers started it and needless to say I have obviously spent free time going back and (don't cringe, Elizabeth!) reading her old posts, which are nothing short of awesome. She gets a special distinguishment because obviously I wouldn't be here without her in like, four different ways.
Favorite Other In-Retrospect:
Leon Neyfakh and Jon Liu's Weekend Gawker tenure. I went through Weekend Gawker editors of yore before starting and their shit was straight-up amazing. -
Ugh. Matt. Haven't I done it enough already? I really like the Gags, even if I'm not crazy about her music. She's like a pop star for Our Times, right? Right.

Yeah, you can call Jewish people "Jews." I mean, they're Jews, so, you know, why not? Just don't try to feed them mayonnaise.

I loved Asheville then, and I almost stayed there when I left. I almost moved back there last year when I stupidly thought things in New York couldn't get any worse for me (they can always get worse). I love Asheville. If I didn't live in New York, it'd be on my short list. I think the state of the economy fucked Asheville pretty hard, so I'm hoping it gets its groove back. But it's the kind of place where you can make friends fast, which is what thankfully happened to me. I miss it all the time.

I have issues with you being a fuckface.

NEVAH. Honestly, I've never tried my hand at writing fiction and I have no idea what non-fiction I'd write so I haven't even tried. I grew up just wanting to be a "book-writer" but I'm very happy doing the do now, you know?

Who sees smells? That sounds fucking awesome. No, absolutely no special talents. I used to think I was good at video games but I haven't played one in forever. OH! I'm an Audi-certified ice driver now. I can twirl an pencil 360-degrees with one hand, like all high school debaters can. I used to act in school plays before middle school. I once was the shortest first baseman in the history of a high school's baseball team. I can ride horses Western-style but I fucking hate horses. I went to Space Camp. Meh?

What's a Pettigrew? Hruska by default, though I can't comment on the nature of her chest for lack of experience. Next time she accosts me in public, I'll ask her to comment on the record.
