Practice practice practice. Might sound cliche but you learn so much more by grabbing your camera and photographing everything. Trying new things and experimenting. Find photographers and styles you like and try to figure out how they did it so you can learn and expand your skill set!

I'm getting started myself. But a great designer and friend said that if you want to do covers know photoshop really well. Know photography really well. Know what's in style. And until you get a job, do mock covers.

I just gave it a shot one day, produced a trailer with photos since I was already doing photography and eventually more people liked them and more wanted them.

THANKS!! I just got FCP and looked up tutorials for it. But start off with Windows Movie Maker or iMovie to learn basics and how to pieces bits together to make a video flow.
