oh man... there are so many places I want to travel. the Mediterranean, Japan, Copenhagen, Belize, Alaska, Thailand, the Maldives, Costa Rica... I could keep going.

starting a blog is fun! I remember when I started my blog, I just wanted a place where I could catalog my thoughts and wish list. your blog can be anything you want it to be, personal, style related, inspirational, etc. I'd suggest thinking about what you'd like to talk about and tell the world, then just go for it!

oh yes... my beloved food blog that I couldn't keep up with. come summer, I'll try to be better at posting more recipes I love!

right now my favorite is sort of a quinoa cabbage casserole I kind of made up one day. it's got all kind of goodness like fresh tomatoes and thyme, garlic, italian spiced vegetarian sausage, and we top it with fresh grated sheep cheese. it's become a weekly meal in our house and it makes a ton.

thank you! I use a Nikon D80 with two different lenses: the 50mm 1.4f and the 35mm 1.8f.

I love wearing dresses but you'll most often find me wearing Levi's skinny jeans, a solid tee or button up shirt, cardigan and oxfords. in the summers I ditch the cardi for a fun tank and constantly sport sandals.

I ask myself this question a lot. I love Oregon. in fact, even more than I loved my home state of Florida. but I thought I'd never leave there.

I guess I don't know where else I'd want to live at this point in my life. the Pacific Northwest seems perfect to me.

haha... well, in a way, yes I do think that I'm attractive but I'm a bit shy about things like this. I don't go around poking my face into every mirror or strut my stuff and I definitely have my flaws.

ha. I get this question a lot. and when my friends or people I meet in real life finally meet him or I start talking about him, they are always like, THAT'S his name!!! I even had a friend go as far as think DLB stood for Dear Loving Boyfriend. :)

when I first started blogging, I wasn't sure if I wanted my name out there. I used a moniker for awhile and have always used DLB for him. now it's just sort of stuck. and we kind of like the mystery behind it! though I'm sure when we post about our wedding it'll blow his cover.

well, I always said I wanted to have babies before I was 30 and I'm 28 now so... ;)

    11. Alyson Graves

      great question. this is something that really irks me sometimes. I spend a lot of time and effort to research fresh and exciting things to blog about, and sometimes people post these "new to me things" on their blogs without linking back and it really frustrates me. {I say "new to me" because sometimes I'll see something on someone's blog that I've seen before, but it triggers me to want to post about it. in this case I'll always write, thanks to _____ for reminding me to check this out!}

as for linking professional or personal work, I think it's a question of rights to use the photos on your blog, therefore you must always link to where you've found them, whether it be a blog, artists site, tumblr, flickr, etc.

    12. Alyson Graves

ha, yes, this is a frequently asked question, but a good one! hm... just one color. I'd have to say yellow. a bright sunny yellow. with pale grey close second.

    13. Alyson Graves

hey Abby! yes, thanks for twisting my arm. ;)

ah, the lunch saga. I struggle with lunch sometimes too. it all depends on what I make for dinner the night before. I'm a big BIG fan of lunch leftovers. when I cook dinner, I try to make something that will be filling enough for dinner AND leave us left overs for lunch. if I don't have something left over, I either resort to the faithful PBJ or even though I try really really hard not to spend the extra money, I grab lunch out.

      hope that helps!!!

      thank you!
I've had a soft spot for letterpress since before I started Unruly Things. when I moved to Portland, I mentioned to a friend that I was interested in taking a class. she told me about a few places in town were I could take classes and I immediatly signed up. there is something so wonderful about letterpressing with a machine over 100 years old and watching as the impression goes onto the paper. after a year and a half of printing, I still become giddy when I first press out a print of a design.

I first started with graphic design when I was in high school. my art teacher was reviewing my portfolio and asked if I'd ever been interested in doing graphic design in college. I'd never even known what it was before, but when she set me up on the computer to finish a few projects in Illustrator, I was hooked.
I have a bachelors degree in studio art, though I have most of my concentration related to graphics. I luckily found a good job right out of college and my experience has gotten me where I am today.
if you're interested in perusing a field in graphic design, it's never too late. if you're not ready to go back to school completely full time, I'd suggest finding a community college or small art school in your area that will let you take classes toward a certificate degree. just learning the basics about the Adobe Suite can get you started, but it takes years to really grasp the skills to be a professional... and I know I'm not even there yet! I'd say start by looking into schools and then browse some design magazines or blogs to see what's out there. graphic design can be a truly rewarding field, and I hope you choose to do it!

my move to Portland has been one of the most fantastic things I ever did, not only for my career but also for my creativity and for my work. there is such an amazing group of creative individuals in Portland that it's hard not to find your niche. plus, there's nothing better than having a close group of friends that you can relate with creatively.

however, the job market is pretty tough in Oregon right now if you're looking for a regular full-time job, opposed to being self-employed. Portland is wonderful and I wouldn't discourage anyone from moving here, ever. I'd say if you're truly passionate about moving, contact like-minded creatives, go to meet ups and do your best to get your name out there. the rest will fall into place.

that is exciting! Portland is such a wonderful place, filled with so many wonderful restaurants. I've definitely got my favorite spots:
The Farm Cafe - wonderful almost vegetarian menu with farm fresh food.
Ken's Artisan Pizza - in my opinion, the best pizza in town.
Por Que No - tacos! pomegranate margaritas!
Stumptown Coffee - a must visit if you're a coffee drinker.
Hopworks - if you're looking to hit up one of Portland's many breweries, be sure to stop at Hopworks... organic and my favorite brewery in town.
Toro Bravo - tapas and fantastic sangria.

that's a good starting point but there are seriously so many amazing places to eat in town. the Willamette Week has a great section on their site for food: http://wweek.com/

      and have fun!!

I plan a majority of my posts in advance. I set up posts to deploy at various times during the day or bookmark sites that I come across to post about at a later time. while most of my blogging is done in advance, I do post things that I come across immediatly if I have the time.
I spend a fair amount of time searching the internet for fresh content. with all the independent designers and sellers on etsy, I find it to be a wonderful resource. I think of something that I want to blog about {vintage shoes, art prints, pillows, etc} then run a search. most times I come up with a winner!

    19. Alyson Graves

my blog started out as a much more personal blog where I cataloged all my thoughts and wish lists. I still only blog about things that I feel personally connected to, but it's become much less personal.
