Tomato seedlings should be kept out of the rain - they don't like wet leaves especially over-night if the temperatures drop. Keep their leaves dry for a few days and they should recover.

Too much nitrogen which promotes leaf growth. Don't feed plants for a while and remove some of the lower leaf branches if you are growing tall varieties.

Use Miracle Grow or a balanced feed until the flowers fade and small green tomatoes appear, then feed them a feed high in potash - any tomato food from a garden center will do.

Tomato split often happens when dry soil receives a good watering - the inside swells and breaks the skin. Try to keep soil evenly moist and water regularly. The problem is - a good downpour of rain and the toms will start to split!

If these spots are very small this is nothing to worry about. If they are about the size of a pea and surrounded by brown concentric rings this could be blight or a similar fungal disease.

This often happens around the lower stem at soil level where there is often little air circulation. Spraying with a systemic fungicide may help.

I know that some growers stress their plants in order to hasten flowering but I am not aware that stressing plants improves fruit size.

If you are in the UK, temperatures will be dropping too low at the end of October for plants to continue to grow and fruit to ripen. However, tomatoes will ripen off the plant in a bowl with a ripe banana.

As tomato plants grow, they send most of their nutrients to the growing tip, so the lower leaves have to do without!

It's a good idea to remove lower leaf branches up to the first truss as this will increase air circulation around the bottom of plants and help prevent fungal diseases.

When tomatoes reach full size, sometimes the inside continues to swell and break the skin, especially if they have received too much water/rain.

You only need to pinch out on tall varieties, after four to six trusses. Side shoots are also removed from tall varieties only.

This sounds like blight - pick tomatoes and let them ripen indoors in a bowl with a ripe banana. The blight will eventually effect the fruit.

The most destructive to my tomatoes this season has been caterpillars but I am not aware of any tomato eating insects that are dangerous to humans - unless you live in an area where you have dangerous insects like tarantulas in your garden!

Wilting leaves can be caused by a number of reasons including several fungal diseases. Over watering can also cause leaves to wilt as the plant becomes too cold at night sitting in water saturated soil. As the weather gets cooler, I suggest that you under water, but foliar feed and water and let the soil almost dry out.

Decide which area of tomato growing you would like to learn more about and ask a specific question.

We had a poor August for temperatures - ripening has been a common problem this season. As soon as they start to turn colour, pick them and put them in a bowl with a ripe banana.
