I have only ever used Canon so I can't say what I think about Nikon as I have never used it but I do love Canon very much :)

I don't have it very often but if I'm in London say Modeling/Photographing then yes people do stare but the easiest thing to do is completely ignore them.

Just concentrate on what you are doing, if you don't you might not get a photograph and at the end of day you are really annoyed with yourself because you are worrying about other people, don't even look to see if people are looking or not after about 5 minutes they get bored and go away, the more you do it the easier it is.
