I've been in two that didn't work out, but I suppose I can try to help.
The most important thing in this kind of relationship is trust. Trust, unfortunately, is difficult enough to have even in a normal relationship. It is even harder to have in a long distance relationship. You cannot see each other every day, you don't really have the people around you to know everything about what they're doing, so it all comes down to seeing how much you can trust them. A relationship without trust simply cannot work.
Space. Space is another important thing you need to remember. I know it sounds contradictory, since you are so far from each other, you are technically already giving a lot of space. However, you need to understand that the other person lives a completely different life from you, a life that does include you, but does not involve you being in their everyday activities. The clingier you are, the more smothered they feel. You guys can, and should, take time out of your life for each other, but being on all their case and trying to know every detail of their life makes it harder for the both of you. You need your own life, and your own things to do. Do not focus your life around them! -
If you are dedicated and trust each other enough!

When I was 13, I used to freestyle battle a lot in the middle of the street with my friends and their neighbors. A lot of my experience came from that, as well as confidence. I mean, come on, a skinny asian guy talking smack to a bunch of black dudes in the middle of the hood and getting away with it, I had to be good at it, right? Ahaha, but yeah. A few years after that, I listened to a lot of Chuckie Akenz, who isn't really big, but he was the main inspiration to me. My style is kind of based on him even today, sensitive meaningful lyrics in an easy to follow flow pattern.
I suck nowadays though, writing/rapping is a skill that you need to keep practicing, just like singing. -
Because there is an easier cultural understanding/similarity.

I cannot. I would love to, though!

Actually, this is something about me that hasn't changed at all. When I'm angry or upset at something, I recite Psalm 23 in my head. When I'm sad, I do the same.
If you don't know what that is, it's a verse in the Bible that starts something off as "The Lord of my shepherd, I shall not want". It is my favorite passage in the Bible, and it happens to be the Psalm of David! Coincidence!? I think not. :P -
Sing your heart out :)
