Chris has some great tattoos, if you guys come to shows or catch us ustreaming you can ask him about them. i honestly don't think i could choose a quote (there are so many....) but i think my favorite quote is from ben gibbard-
"So when you feel discouraged, and there's a lack of color here, please don't worry lover, it's really bursting at the seems, absorbing everything."

yikes, this is a hard one. ummm, start by writing good music, and by that I mean years and years writing and making your music better and better and better. when it's so good that people are begging you to post it or make it available to buy, then worry about all the business side of things, which to be honest is mostly luck and patience. there is lots of good advice to be had for free in forums and blogs, friends and other musicians. don't throw money away, and by that I mean don't pay for anything that doesn't give you immediate product or measurable results. I could go on and on about the business stuff, and to be honest we're just starting and struggling to make it work, so i would say if you're starting just focus on making the music even better than it is now.

And as for advice about that, the only thing i would say is that you should write music you like. You can always speculate about what fans will like, what would be popular, and everybody is made of opinions but the only thing that matters is that you like the music you're creating, or none of it is worth it. and to be honest, if you're passionate about the music you're making then there's gonna be other people who are too, and you can find them when you need to.

inspiration can come from anywhere, but i tend to wait for something i'm passionate about to come along to inspire lyrics I feel everyone can relate to. The first EP (They Would At Least Stay Busy) was actually all about dealing with death and sickness, (it was inspired by my brother getting really sick and being in the hospital for several months)whereas Do I Dare Disturb The Universe was more of a celebration of life.

As for songs, it's a long long process. It starts with riffs, which can come in a moment of inspiration or can take a few weeks to turn into something I really like, and I generally take a few weeks or months to get the lyrics and structure hammered out. The next step is taking it to the band, and we work on the new stuff here and there while we're practicing for a few months or maybe even longer if we've just released something. When we finally get into the studio with a good demo it can be another 6 months easily to get the final version polished up and ready to go, so all in all it's years before the initial riff becomes a full blown song.

i learned piano from a teacher starting at age 5 and then transferred what I knew about piano to guitar around age 17. I maintain that I still don't know how to sing, I need to actually learn that stuff. Kevin taught himself guitar and piano, Chris (I'm pretty sure) mostly taught himself bass and I have no idea how Rich learned drums, I just know he's always been pretty good.

As for secret songs there are about 150 TSOTE songs that are being kept deliberately secret from the public, mostly because they all suck except for about 15 of 'em and we can't release those until they get recorded. Which costs A LOT of money, which kind of requires a label (unless a ton of people randomly start buying our records and we make enough to record another album and go on tour etc etc). but for now it's the patience game....

ummm yikes, this question thing is getting hard. I would be a nice big tree that went through all the seasons (birth, death, rebirth, etc.) and i haven't met any dinosaurs so i'm not sure which one is my favorite, although i imagine it would kinda like meeting a crocodile, which i have done and it was actually pretty boring.

i love all my songs as if they were my children. we worked very hard on all of them and they all have different strengths. my favorite song of ours right now is one that's not released yet and probably won't be for a bit, but the working title is currently survivedthislong_fullband_v4

i don't know if it's the happiest but here's one: i used to debate competitively way back when i was in high school and once we worked and worked all season and finally won a tournament. It was the best feeling ever, accomplishment and pride in your work. a similar thing happened each time we finished the albums. a serious feeling of accomplishment

that miley cyrus and the jonas brothers will have a baby and it will become the ultimate teen superstar and will continually oppress the rock nation from rock freedom until one day a hero is born who will vanquish it for good, allowing prosperous good music to flow freely again. Seriously though.
