Has your friend ever seen people at work in a darkroom? A lot of the editing in Photoshop is very similar to what people did in the darkroom - adjusting for exposure, color, dodging, burning, the like, it's just that it's all digital and thus can be greatly manipulated. Even if you get everything right in the camera, photography remains a medium of expression, and that means that people can push it and interpret whichever they like, it doesn't make those who edit any less a photographer than those who do not. Editing is like developing a style, much like the distinguishing stroke of a painter's brush or the way a painter sees color. Your friend sounds like they want to be more photojournalistic, which is completely fine (although I've known of many an instance where photojournalists have edited their photographs), they just have to deliver photographs that they truly feel represents what their clients want.

Again, since I don't use a lot of filters in my work, I can't answer this very well, sorry! Generally, you get what you pay for. And no, you still need a lens cap to minimalize dust and other weather affecting your lens.

You can put a filter on a lens as long as it fits. The screw-on lens filters need to be the same size as the number printed inside your lens (known as thread size). Adding a filter to your lens protects your lens if you're shooting without a hood, but filters can alter the quality of the image and can reduce it - for example, lenses can increase lens flare and vignetting. I usually add a UV filter to protect the lens, but because so much of my work is portrait work and there is post-processing, I don't go fancy on filters.

Great question! I actually answered this on my blog (http://shangchenphoto.com/blog/personal/giving-thanks-2010/) but I'll repeat and add:

Religion plays less with my profession but more with how I view career. The fact that I am a Christian doesn’t mean that I’m only limited to Christian weddings (most of my clients are quite diverse), and I definitely am open to capturing gay weddings as well. I focus much more on treating everyone with love, openness, forgiveness, and grace directs how I treat my clients.

As for my faith and weddings, I personally believe that marriage is sacred, until death do you part. I *personally* (and not for anyone else) that one should try to remain committed to marriage for as long as they can and really try to live out grace on earth. My parents' marriage and how much they've gone through sets a very strong example for that.

I've seen this post before, and the core of what it basically says is simply - there are ways to take better portraits, and I wholeheartedly agree. Here's my in-depth response

      1. Panasonic > Canon > Nikon. I don't believe brand matters. It's skill

      2. Flash adds 7 years. Bad flash does. Well-done flash creates some of the world's most beautiful portraits.

      3. Blot out all reality - yes. If you look at any of my close-up portraits, I really blur out the background

      4. Peak times - Daylight > Nighttime. Agreed. And yes, golden hour exists.

I really don't know, I think it'd be scary to plan that far in advance. in 10 years, I'd like to have a family, I suppose, hopefully be settled somewhere, have my career be going... somewhere. In 50 years - if I'm alive by that point - I'd like to be able to look back and be happy with the way I've lived life and have done more good than bad to the world.

Probably something chinese that my mom made, her cooking is unbelievable!- To further elaborate, I grew up overseas in Europe up through age ten, where we did not celebrate Thanksgiving. Christmas is a more meaningful holiday in my family. Also, other than my parents, I don't have family in the States to celebrate the holidays with. In addition, my family being Chinese, turkey is not a meat that is in common in the Chinese cuisine. We've actually mostly cooked chicken and duck over the years (I'm making duck), and we've tried stuffing once and hated it. Thanksgiving at my parents' house is typically more a lavish Chinese potluck where my Dad hosts his international graduate students who do not have the means or time to travel home to their families thousands of miles away.

Many people have influenced me a lot - my piano teacher, my mother, but most recently - and I honestly say this completely without any pain or ill will - my ex. Those of you guys who've never met him, I hope you do someday. He's my role model of someone who completely follows his passion, does things with no selfish desire, and has been an inspiration to me as I embark on a life of being in startups. He's taught me to add more spontaneity into my life. I love the way he laughs at the silliest things. He's extremely supportive to all his friends and is easily one of the nicest people I've ever known.

      [Thanksgiving question drive] I love my 85mm f/1.8. I just put down $1700 for the 35mm f/1.4, and I really want the 24mm f/1.4 or the 14-24 f/2.8 (re-answered this, there was a typo)

I don't know, I'm pretty consistent on- and off-line. I think people are surprised to find out that I'm a lot more laid-back in person despite the amount of stuff that happens in my life.

Wish I knew, most gifts are wrapped up and it would be awkward to see your photographer snoop around them and not take photos, no?

That I can learn to take things less personally. I am actually quite easily hurt by things people say.
