What is the difference between "while" and "although?"

Basically, "while" is for illiterate clods, and "although" is for the educated elite.

Sadly due to the fact that most people represent the former, dictionaries are starting to equate them.

This is wrong and should be a candidate for the death penalty.

"While" refers to a temporal relation.

Correct: While I type thus, I am listening to a Beatles song.

Also correct: Although I have never been a huge Beatles fan, I recently acquired some of their music.

Plain ignorant: While many people are illiterate clods, we should not attempt to teach them proper grammar.
