Why do you think the church is so opposed to women clergy? [15]

Because they're opposed to anything that would mean either less power for the people already there, or a shift away from what those people know and like.

Something something hypocrites, something something douchebags, something something chauvinist pig bastards...

The Episcopal Church isn't. Our archbishop is a woman, actually.

I realize "the church" usually means the Catholic Church, but I think you should be more explicit for this kind of question. Growing up, I went to both a UCC and Greek Orthodox church, and while the Greek Orthodox church didn't allow women in the clergy the UCC church did. I also went to a Catholic high school my junior and senior year of high school, and they similarly don't allow for clergywomen.

In the Catholic Church at least, they believe that Church tradition is equal in value to the Bible, as the popes, saints, and bishops who came up with the traditions did so "in communion with God." Because European society was heavily male-dominated at the time of the Church's origins, it's not surprising it became a tradition very early on.

However, I know for the UCC church, because Jesus calls on both men and women to spread the "good news" in the Bible, that is easy justification for both sexes to participate as clergy members. The UCC church is also very accepting of homosexuals and will allow homosexuals to be ministers.

I have no idea what the Church are up to.

Must be some doctrine that dates back to the middle ages which the church always seems to follow.

@BillSanders already covered this -- my church isn't.

The reason I think that some churches are opposed to female clergy is because of their interpretation of Scripture relative to the differences between men and women. The church (and the God) I am involved with chooses to let individuals work that out for themselves.

I had a really good response to this about how, to imply that all facets of Christianity follow that school of thought is factually incorrect. But as I posted it, Formspring locked my account because it was "insecure" and now I don't really feel motivated to answer it again because it will never be as well-worded as it was. And that's pretty fucking depressing, frankly.

Because the one who leads the church was against womans...?

The best way to feel powerful and elite is to exclude others.

The Catholic Church teaches that it has no authority to allow women to become priests because Jesus Christ willingly chose only men as his apostles when he instituted the priesthood at the Last Supper.
