For the sake of basic information, I was raised Roman Catholic but I have studied just about every major religion during my travels and educational background. I find the various faiths incalculably useful for understanding cultural difference and differences in primary values. All of the faiths also show that the basic problems of human nature, greed, hatred, and ignorance are fairly universal.
The different methods for improving our condition- prayer, good works, charity, meditation, and the like all have their own merits when their meaning and purpose are understood, but for most they are just empty ritual. A prayer given in honest need and contrition is far more powerful than one mouthed to placate an authority figure.
Religion is like any other aspect of human nature; it can be used for both noble and despicable ends. So like anything else you need to separate the essential good from the inessential evils. Or as has been stated elsewhere- separate out that which promotes wellbeing from that which detracts from it. Occasionally even good and evil can be too loaded as terms.
