If the government is there to provide for their people and make sure they get the opportunities needed, it'd be wise to do so, in a smart system that would be hard to abuse.

If the government lets the market decide, we're going to have to let this person go. We'd need cheap suicide pills though.

Pay it? No, but I don't think it unreasonable to set-up a payment plan of sorts. Emergencies don't care whether you have the funds or not, and having a little bit of a buffer zone between breathing, and going bankrupt. Probably a good idea to have some kind of insurance though. As I have said before, you cannot rely on the government for everything, and have to plan for, and address these sorts of things in advance.

((So last night I inherited a cardboard cut-out of former Knicks all-star Chauncey Billups.

While this sounds and is very strange, this is a precious heirloom that has been handed down generation to generation for about 4 years.))

yes, you shouldn't have to die just because you don't have enough money.

In england thast exactly what happens-wether they can or cant afford it. And nearly everyone is healthy. Sure the NHS has its issues and is poorly funded but we should be proud-weve got one of the only government funded, free to all services on the planet. If you dont like how the NHS works then feel free to find private healthcare.....you just wont be able to afford it......and thats why we have the NHS......

They should pay it evwn if they can afford it, because we pay enough tax for that kind of basic healthcare, and thats what we get in Australia. Usa is like a third world country when it comes to healthcare.

yeah i think they should, life and death shouldnt come down to money, everyone has the right to life and if you cant afford medical bills then that shouldnt mean you have to miss out on things or end up in dept due to illness, its bed enough without those kind of worries

Absolutely. They should also pay my utilities, buy my groceries, make my car and house payment for me, put my kids through school, and wipe my butt for me as well.

Well in England we don't have medical bills but if someone can't afford it in America, then I think the government should pay for them as the treatment they're getting might be a life or death situation or something like that.

I live in England, so that already happens. ;)

Well, if the person cannot afford it as in he used it all for bad activities like alcohol, drugs, gambling and such, then no. But if they're income income is really low, then yes, to a certain degree.

    NO!!!

If you want to I won't stop you. I might even kick some in myself. I will not force others to or sanction the use of force for such undertakings.

    This is a problem.
It will steal from everyone, as well as ruin healthcare.
I suspect it could kill more people that it would save. If nothing else it eliminates the ways to control which camp (kill|save) you fall into, you're at their mercy. Cancer, your surival rate drops from 60-ish% to perhaps 40-ish% percent for the next 5 years. uh oh!

Not to mention since it's governments job to take care of you, exercise could be mandated. Food that people like could be outlawed. They have to worry about the bottom line, your freedom is token. If not they just use you as a beast of burden to help the unhealthy.

So many unintended consequences to this. I'm fearful for the future, and hope it won't be as bad. It will get bad, but I'm hoping it will take time. The doctors who are working now, have some notion of helping people. As the new ones come around this could be less and less the case, until you're dealing with some like the DMV. Again, fear.

There are a lot of things the government should do, but they aren't doing any of them - ever.

  20. Hugo

If the person cannot, legitimately, afford it, then yes.

  21. Chibi

Of course. This shouldn't even be up for discussion.

  22. Boss Tweed (Spam line)

Yes. You shouldn't die because you're poor.

  23. Sean Q. Wiseguy

Not necessarily. The government should hold insurers and providers responsible for gouging and screwing over their customers to begin with.
