Could you please explain how a lot of today's photogs get that bright whitish skin? It doesn't quite look desaturated, but maybe more of a high key? I try to always ettr and have good white bal but just can't seem to get the look. Is there a PS trick?

One thing you could try is doing a "selective color" adjustment layer, and adjust the yellows, reds, whites, neutrals, & blacks! Curves might be another option, as well. There are so many ways to do things, and it will often be different depending on the original image. If you want to show me an example of an image you're working on, I can see what I can do with it and tell you how I achieved it :)

Actually...it probably looks subtle because I never use a reflector ;) I've used mine maybe 10 times ever - and I don't even think any of those photos are in my portfolio! If I ever use it, though, I use white!

Hi Sara! I really enjoy your work. I can't remember where exactly but I read that you started shooting bands and musicians. Do you mind sharing how you were able to market yourself to that genre? Was it mostly word of mouth or your own marketing efforts?

It was really just being in the right place at the right time. I started photography just before the peak of MySpace's popularity, which is how everyone discovered new music. I worked with a few artists/bands from my area, some of whom had really large internet fan bases, and it just grew from there. People would see photos of mine stretching massively across the top of a band's MySpace, then they'd add me/contact me. And every band/artist always wanted to be like someone else who was (even seemingly) successful, so if I shot an artist they admired, they wanted to shoot with me, too.

Unfortunately, I think music photography has really started to die. After everyone stopped using MySpace, there was no free/easy way for bands to promote themselves and make themselves stand out from the rest. Yeah, bands have Facebook's now...but there's no way to customize it, and having good quality photography doesn't even matter because FB will compress the photo to crap and it will be shown fairly small anyway - versus, again, the massive banners on the tops of MySpace's. And there's really no way to "discover" new bands using FB, either (MySpace had top friends and the most-played charts, among other things). I could go on & on about this for a while...but I'm going to go to sleep instead hahaha.

Explain why the texture layer is important in your editing process of separation. Im confused why you need it thank you! xo

For most people, the reason skin needs retouching is because of color, not texture. Uneven skin tone, blotchiness, redness, darkness under the eyes, etc. For example, if you remove the redness from a zit, it isn't that apparent anymore.

By having a color layer and a texture layer, you can even out all of the discoloration without getting rid of the natural skin texture which, well, makes someone's skin look natural. Then on the texture layer you have the option of removing some of the texture if you'd like (bumps, lines, hair, etc) - instead of being forced to remove texture by cloning and whatnot on a non-separated image!
