On DeviantART for instance, people were most willing to pay for good quality between 150 and 200 € just 3 years ago, which was a solid income.

(Always calculate how many hours you work on something. 30 bucks is a quite ok for an hourly income. Even 20 bucks is quite fine. Everything that goes below that will make you a starving artist.)

But now, so many people are doing dumping, cause they're just hobbyists or students, making it really hard for the ones who need the money to eat... and Dollar has grown so weak, that nobody wants to pay Euros anymore. Even when you lower to around 75 €, you won't get many requests on places like that.

So most people are indeed working between 10 and 40 dollars which I call uber dumping. I'd never suggest anyone to work below 150 bucks, because that would be working for cheap and not in any way compensate the work you've put into it!

- When you're just starting out you might not want to spend hundrets of dollars for a new tablet. Here I'd recommend trying out one from WACOM'S Bamboo series first. They cost around 50 bucks and serve well when it comes to all basic needs that go with digital painting.

- When you're already working digitally a lot and you're looking out for something that responds perfectly to every move you make, you might want to buy a WACOM Intous tablet foryourself.

Overall, I would suggest you to stay away from every tablet that's not from WACOM. Comparable to every other thing that people do for money. The customer comes first.
So when people say you are broke as an "artist" that is obviously because most people that call themselves artists do not strive to work for anyone or please a customer.
You will have to make a decision. DO you want to do this for a living and work for your customer then? You could still create your own art during your free time. Or do you want to be a "pure" artist?
