Hi Aria, could you please share some tips on lifestyle family shoot? Like what to photograph, the lighting, the lenses to use, the poses, what you say to make them act natural, what you have them do, and etc. Love your family shoot by the way! (by sfenella)

Whenever I shoot in homes, I try to do it in the morning when there's more light (unless the client tells me there's a better time for light, depending on their home). I shoot mostly with my 50mm 1.4 and 50mm 1.4. I photograph them all in their environment (kids in their playroom, baby in the nursery, the whole family cuddled up on the couch, bed, doorstep, etc. I ask them what kinds of things they like to do together (read stories, play with toys, eat snacks in the kitchen, etc.).

Hi Aria! I'm moving to downtown SLC at the end of the month! I don't know much about the city or where good places to shoot engagements, family shoots and bridals would be. If it's not too much trouble would you mind throwing out a couple of ideas? :) (by darylschmidt)

I don't really have places written down, but I just drive around downtown and pick a few places. I actually don't like shooting in Salt Lake very much because you find a good tiny spot, but you can only take a few photos there, and then you have to hop in your car and drive to another spot...all the while with horrible parking and lots of one-way streets. I'm a stressed out driver, so I prefer shooting in the slower paced Utah County. :)

I add a little bit of sharpening (in a batch action that converts my photos to sRGB, then sharpens and saves as high quality JPG). I sharpen by going to Filter --> Sharpen --> Unsharp Mask and entering ~ Amount: 15; Radius 2.8; Threshold: 0 (you can decide how much sharpness you want by increasing the Amount...this is a pretty light amount).

(by colemax)

That's awesome! I would suggest trying to shoot as much as possible - trying daily, if you can. Just photograph everything around you, in all sorts of lighting to really hone your skill. To build your portfolio, I suggest setting up mini shoots with friends and family, as well as finding models (check out www.modelmayhem.com to find models in your area willing to work for trade for photos). Set up a blog and FB page and start posting regularly (and tag the subjects on FB so their friends see your work). This will generate exposure and start getting the word of mouth out there. Good luck!

Also, whenever I do find a good field or forest it tends to have a no trespassing sign, do you ever ignore those? What do you suggest? (by emilie419)

I do trespass sometimes.... I try to avoid it if I can, but sometimes I just have no choice! :)

Ansley's bridals were taken in two locations: the first was an orchard near me. If you're going north on 1100 E. (in AF/PG) towards the Timp temple, go past the temple and take your first right on 1100 N. Follow that all the way down till you see big blue silos on your right and a small orchard on your left.

The second spot was a big field, also near the Timp temple. If you're on that same road (1100 E) heading towards the temple, turn left at the temple (700 N), and go down a few streets till you see baseball fields on your right. Turn right there, and follow all the way to the very end of the road/parking lots, and it dead ends onto a big field.
