I'm just thankful to be alive.
I googled that, Mary Oliver. It is stunning and I love it, is it from a book? -
philosophy of science and scientific inquiry — what constitutes the scientific method, why is it superior/so highly valued given its obvious flaws, epistemology in the philosophy of science, is the search for a grand unified theory meaningless
ethics — is there a moral truth? can we know this moral truth? what does it mean to be ethical?
semantics — to what extent does language structure the way we think and how does that affect the things we know about the world?
also existentialism and rational choice theory and our academic belief in it -
:') thank you anon you make me feel like Taylor Swift (but in a good way)

haha, believe it or not my chinese netted me an A1 in the June paper so that helped things a bit. i just worked really hard on the subjects that were pulling me down and cut my losses on subjects that were really hopeless... so i legitimately didn't study for physics at all—not even for the actual O levels—and worked my ass off for math (i'm known as The Only Person Who Failed E Math In The Entire Level, and yes, that deserved to be capitalized all the way) and pulled my scores for E and A Math up to A1 and A2 respectively. Given that History/English/Lit/Chem were never really problems for me (I actually really miss doing Chem, it was the only science I genuinely enjoyed) the 10 points were pretty attainable now that I think about it.
yep! don't beat yourself up if you don't get in via DSA... that's no indication of your abilities, a lot of my teammates weren't DSA and they still made it to the table three. anyway i'm sure you want to do well for the Os so that should be sufficient motivation to get the grades you need for ACJC. all the best for your exams and i hope you get in! I never regretted my decision to DSA even though the Hwach HP looked really tempting at time. my class was really the best, and i loved working with my team/coaches and i'm sure you will too at AC x -
haha technically yes... but if i hear/see something i think i might like i just youtube it!

hello anon
when the applications open (which should be in may? june? middle of the year?) download the forms, fill them in and post them. AC will call you up if they're interested in having you.
as for grades... well... the stereotype of DSA is that you can't make it into that JC academically and so have to resort to getting in via your other talents... tbh i find that to be more true of sports than debate in general because you can't debate unless you're vaguely intelligent and i would say that translates into some modicum of academic abilities. i had 20 points at the juncture of my DSA (had As for all my humanities subjects but C5s for math/sciences... gah), but was accepted anyway, although the teacher-in-charge told me he expected 10 points at prelims, which i eventually attained, and got 7 points at O levels (-2 for CCA, -2 for higher chinese, so my raw score was 3). so whether you need grades or not really varies. largely also depends on your relationship with the teachers and what they expect of you. i knew i would get 10 or below at Os but DSA-ed anyway because AC was my goal and so i looked at it as sort of an early decision style entry (like US unis). also i really wasn't expecting to get DSA, i only debated for a year competitively before trying out.
my DSA trials involved 15 minute prep, a senior's speech and then my speech. i didn't give any POIs and was convinced i screwed it up. the motion was THW ban criminals from voting.
i guess in a nutshell my answer to all your questions is really 'it depends...', so all the best! -

ok~ paying 100 pounds a week. Not great but liveable. If you want better housing you can always pay more: college hall is 200 a week for a single room, someone cleans your ensuite toilet everyday and we all call it college hotel
