Keeping in mind that intelligence is subjective, what is it to you?

Having a thirst for knowledge, being able to independently form informed opinions about issues he or she deems to be important, being able to challenge and/or question moral absolutes and acts of blind obedience, and possessing the skill to think critically.

How do you think that one's intelligence should be measured since you (and I!) don't believe in standardized tests?

Intelligence should not be measured, but observed and subjectively interpreted. (And yes, standardized tests are just about the shittiest form of "measurement" out there.)

“Everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid.”
      ― Albert Einstein

Everybody is a genius in their own special way. My definition of intelligence belongs to me only, and whether or not I see it in people is subject to my own judgment, to which the person owes no obligation to conforming with.

what does the upside down triangle stand for? :)

Nonconformity, gender flexibility/gender issues, lgbtq rights/womens rights/human rights, antiviolence/pacifism, harmony (equilateral triangle)
As it is on my wrist, it can both be seen both as upright (by me) and upside down/inverted (by people looking at my wrist when my arm is down). Rightside up triangles represent masculinity and inverted ones represent femininity, so that's more on gender issues and perhaps touching on androgyny/gender liberality.
Also - since triangles were used to denote people who deviated from Hitler's perfect race (recall the jews' yellow star) it can be used as a symbol embracing differences and nonconformity and celebrating diversity in the world.

Why did you move to Germany? Are you living with Daniel? Why are you moving back to Vietnam? Are you unhappy there? :(

To get my citizenship application sorted. No, I'm living with my mum. I'm moving back to Vietnam because, yes, I am unhappy here, and the school system is far too conflicting. When I move back I will be seeing Daniel and all my friends and everything will be okay again and I will be very very very happy.

For now, life really fucking sucks, but I gotta brave through the storm to see the rainbow, y'know? =]

Do you ask enough questions or do you settle for what you know?

I guess I normally settle but I should really ask more or else I'll be really restricted to what I need to study rather than what I want to know.

How do you write so well? Do you just read a lot and extensively? I mean, I can write without making much grammar mistakes, but I've never been able to attain that kind of imagery and beauty that you show in your writing. Do you have any tips on this?

Man, pretty much nothing on formspring makes me happier than when somebody has such lovely things to say about my writing... thank you so much. And my advice would be just to read and write as much as you can - it doesn't even have to be books. Read poems, essays (not necessarily academic), literature, even well-written blog posts - just anything that interests you. Read good writing, practice good writing. Every day. Think like a poet. Form the image in your head. Think in metaphors, analogies, sensory language. Be creative and use your imagination. Be inspired. Be VERY inspired. Read more good writing, practice, practice, practice. Imagine someone reading your work out loud like a beautiful piece of spoken poetry. Play with setting the rhythm and music and syntax of your sentences. Sound them out like a song. Then read good writing some more. Anything.

Thoughts on homosexuality? Do you think you would ever like a girl?

I think homosexuality is a very sensitive topic because so many different people have so many different views on it.
In my opinion, I believe that love is between two people, and as long as they love each other and compliment each other, nothing can come between them, not even gender. I don't think I personally will be homosexual or lesbian because I'm catholic and that does not allow it, as we believe that love is between a man and a woman. But that does not say I do not condone homosexuality because I am fine with it, as long as the two are happy and love each other. But personally, I wouldn't be ♤

Furthermore, it seeks to determine if our mental abilities are appropriate for our age. They are basically there to help people determine which areas of cognition a person should be guided. :) but, you are right in saying intelligence varies across people

If that's the case, then these so-called tests sure as hell aren't out to do what they're purported to. All they do, much like a large proportion of all educational assessment schemes, is gauge how well you've memorised your ABCs, the rules (the same grammatical problems the SATs use every single year), when to stop for the red light and when to go when it is green, how well you've absorbed the formulas, vocabulary words, and formulas in plain black and white.

A standardized test by definition should measure an individual's capability for critical thinking and problem solving at a standardized (equitable) level, not the ability to cram for "what's to be expected on the test" the night before. Those who know how to play the game would obviously get a distinct advantage, which, by twisting the scales, make them no longer standardized by default. You can get perfect marks on the SATs simply by paying big bucks for tutors and "good" books that teach you all the rules of the game. The SATs are supposed to measure aptitude and ability (which are not at all touched upon in the current incarnation of standardized tests), not what you've memorised.

I take psychology too (in high school, yes, but that doesn't make it any less credible), and it's long been drilled into our heads that all these major organisations - collegeboard, for instance - are doing this for is the money. There's no other reason why they could cost so much, and why they let you retake the test over and over again.

And that's not even taking into account the idea that different people processes ideas in different ways. The tests today do nothing to take that into account. The very idea that the tests are divided into reading, writing, and maths already screams "unfair" to me, and that alone should be obvious to just about anybody. (Actually there was an article in news week not too long ago that said many studies found that due to the way the tests questions were being chosen the test were actually horribly biased and not an accurate representation of all students abilities. I think it was UCLA that was actually considering doing away with them because of the evidence that was rising.)

Standardized tests test ones ability to take standardized tests. Nothing more.
