I have this problem a lot, too. There are things you can do about it, but as annoying as they are, humans are fairly useful.

Normal practice in the sciences is to state any potential conflicts of interest. Never once have I seen a review state, other than in passing, whether the reviewer got the game (or film, or meal) from his employer, the publisher or his own pocket. We're expected to trust them to remain impartial, even though they don't practise basic transparency.

I would plug it in in my flat, using a long extension cable. Then I would pull myself along the cable to escape the island and get home.

For safety, I wouldn't turn it on at the mains.
