Make sure it is well detangled/deep-conditioned before you put it in a protective style. It shouldn't form knots as long as you take out the style carefully. Make sure you take it out and detangle in sections with lots of conditioner. I use the cheap 99cent Suave conditioner to detangle. You don't have to trim your knots off either, you should carefully detangle the knots with your fingers. It will take a lot of time but at least you don't have to trim it off. Hope this helps!
