I've actually been able to be a lot more hands-on than I ever thought I would be, though that's probably mainly thanks to the lecturer who I'm helping out, who seems particularly trusting of us students. At first I had a few sessions with the PhD student who's working on the same project, and who taught me how to run the programmes that participants use in the experiment, and then after a while he basically said, "off you go!"
So I've conducted the experiment on a few participants by myself (so I acted as the experimenter), and then I've also done a bit of data extraction and manipulation- nothing hardcore, just Excel stuff, but useful to know nevertheless. I've also had the opportunity to have a few chats with my lecturer about his area which was pretty nice.
Definitely email that psych. department- it's worth a try! I understand I've been particularly lucky in how hands-on I've been, but any experience is better than no experience and it seems like most psych. departments need help over the summer, so it seems like your best shot. -
That's a shame! Do keep trying, though. It's amazing what pester power can do.
-
Haha unfortunately not- would be a great party trick!
-
Firstly, yes, it's unpaid.
I got the role simply by sending an email to my tutor who then forwarded it to other members of staff in the department. Then one of the lecturers replied saying he needed help with his research, and that was that! It wasn't a scheme as such, just me putting myself out there. I guess it goes to show prestige isn't everything, and I'm very thankful to have this experience. -
I'll answer this question in two parts. :) Starting with the first part, well, that's a difficult one as obviously I've only ever studied at Royal Holloway. I personally probably wouldn't study at the other UoL colleges (for undergraduate) because, unlike Royal Holloway, they're actually based in London and tend not to be campus universities; I didn't want to be in a city and I wanted a campus, so Royal Holloway was the only UoL college that fitted the bill for me. For postgraduate I'll definitely consider applying to UCL, though, and by no means am I saying that RHUL is the best UoL college- it's just the best for me for undergraduate. I'd put UCL ahead of RHUL in terms of academia, and I'd put King's just ahead (though it depends on subject, of course). I don't mention LSE because, technically, it's not a college of the UoL anymore, but of course LSE is also an excellent institution.
I also applied to York, Oxford, Exeter and Warwick, getting rejections from the first two.
Hope that helps! -
Currently loving strawberry and lime Kopparbergs.

A lot. Slightly dubious about where they're going at the moment, but only time will tell.

Depends what you like really! If you're happy pubbing it rather than clubbing it it's great, but there are loads of places to go nearby if you do want to go crazy- the SU, Medicine (great on a Saturday night), Liquid in Windsor, Oceana in Kingston, and of course London. I highly recommend going on one of the coach trips to London; everything's included for usually around £15, coach takes you back to campus at 3am and they go to some massive clubs- Fabric, that sort of thing. But then there are those days when you can just go to Crosslands and have a Pimm's in the quad!
People? I'll keep this bit short- AMAZING. Made so many good friends here. People of all cultures, nationalities, ages, and everyone's so friendly, with all of this helped by the campus environment meaning that you tend to bump into people you know all the time. Also you can make great friends in clubs and societies so if you're thinking about coming here I highly recommend joining one or two of those as they're big at RHUL and you can choose from pretty much anything! -
I don't really have one in particular...But Hot Chip as a band is probably my most listened to.
-
Smoked salmon. Can't live without the stuff.
-
Definitely more of a talker, though I can listen if necessary.
-
I will always throw stuff away if I don't want it anymore- I'm "anally expulsive", as Freud would so delightfully put it.
-
Don't go on Facebook. Revise.
