Thank you for your question! The first staff person hired to specifically serve LBGT students was Brent Bilodeaux in 1994. There have been a few cubile or small office spaces that Brent worked out of over his 15 year career. An dedicated office space known as the Office for LBGT Concerns was opened in 302 Student Services Building in about 2005. The space was expanded in 2010 to include a student lounge and additional office space in. The LBGT Resource Center is open from 9am-5pm Monday through Friday, unless there is a special event we have closed for. For more information, go to www.lbgtrc.msu.edu or email lbgtrc@msu.edu

Thank you for your interest in supporting LBGTQ folks! I would be happy to take time to sit down with you talk about options for involvement. There are 13+ organizations, and additional initiatives through the LBGT Resource Center! hurlber3@msu.edu

For our panel program, we bring diverse people to share their stories, expertise, and opinions. Each panelist may answer the question of ‘preference’ vs. ‘orientation’ differently. In general, we coach story tellers to be aware of the language they use and assure that people are saying what they mean to say.
I hope that your question has been answered. -

I am afraid that your question got a little cut off. From what I see, it appears you are really hurt and angry that you are not feeling supported and respected by someone important to you. It is especially devastating when our children and parenting are demeaned.
I see a lot of potential strengths in you through your question: you have a significant ongoing relationship, you recognize that it is silly that your step-dad has not come accept you even after all this time, and you are protective and concerned about your children. That is little consolation when are feeling so hurt and threatened.
If you are an MSU student, I recommend that you work with the counseling center for immediate and ongoing support. There is a support groups called OurSpace that you may find helpful. If you are a faculty or staff person at MSU, you have the option of the Employee Assistance Program as well as counseling services through your insurance provider. If you are nto affiliated with MSU, I encourage you to find support through your insurance or community services.
I wish you well. -
MSU is one of the best places in the country to find LGBT materials...especially vintage, historical, underground, 'zine, and newsletter stuff. The Special Collections of MSU Library is world famous for the LBGT Collection and the American Radicalism Collection!

You will find the new release fiction selection at MSU library impressive. You also have the library right here in the LBGTRC! You can view our collection online at http://lbgtrc.msu.edu/. Go to the Library link. -
We have some information in the Resources section of our website (http://lbgtrc.msu.edu/resources), as well as a Campus Climate Report that was compiled in 2009 (http://lbgtrc.msu.edu/about-us, towards the bottom of the page).
If you have a particular area of research interest that you are interested in, shoot us an email at lbgtrc@msu.edu and we'll see if we can connect you with someone. -
I've emailed our contact at Michigan Consumers for Healthcare to see if we can get the full Powerpoint presentation for you; in the meanwhile, here's a video on the Affordable Care Act that was shown at the presentation: http://healthreform.kff.org/The-Animation.aspx

There will be tons of members of the LBGTQA Spartan community at the Welcome Event, so you can connect and reconnect with people who can be your friends here. We'll also have representatives available from all of the LBGT neighborhood caucuses, as well as other student organizations.
RSVP to our Facebook event (https://www.facebook.com/events/451252741563807/) and keep checking back there and our website for more information as we plan the Fall Welcome. We'd love to see you stop by! -
Students, faculty, staff, and others are sometimes insensitive. Sometimes it comes from ignorance, and sometime malice. I recommend letting the speaker know privately that you found their language to be offensive or inappropriate. For example, "When you said X, I felt disparaged." It is rarely helpful to challenge someone in front of others as it puts them on the defensive and less open to hearing other perspectives that may help them learn. Check out the www.glsenn.org website for great ideas for care-fronting hurtful language.

Just about anything, but you should know that the LBGT Resource Center is not a counseling center or a hotline. We are happy to take time to help people sort our what they need, and then refer them to more appropriate providers of information and support. You are invited to stop in or call the LBGTRC for more clarification, or ask your questions anonymously fthrough Formspring...just like this question!

I can provide you with some very academic information, or some very simple off-the-cuff information.
In general, the campus climate for LBGTQA folks is great. This is not New York City, but for a midwestern college town, it is pretty wonderful. The network of students here is more formally organized and visible here than U of M, but faculty, staff and graduate students are less organized and visible than U of M. I hope this helps.
