She eats EVERYTHING and it's such a relief. I was so worried that she would be a picky eater like me because I believe there is a genetic factor to the level of pickiness I have in my diet. When I was pregnant my diet didn't change, but I tried to eat a lot more protein--mainly edamame and protein shakes every day. I don't see myself really trying any new foods in my life and when I was pregnant I didn't crave anything different.
Alice's first food was red lentil curry made by our friend Isa. She eats homemade food every day, usually cooked by Dave or my mom. Today for lunch she had french toast and pears. For dinner she had couscous, tofu, grapes, oranges, and half of a fresh cooked acorn squash that she shared with her dad. -

I listen every night but only to old Art Bell shows! Typically anything after 2004/2005 I skip, but I have about 15 gigs of old Coast shows with Art!

I never learned "grammar" because I was taught by immersion. My husband is now taking German (from a native English speaker) and his lessons are ALL grammar--I can never follow along or explain grammar rules to him. Things just sound right or wrong to me.

Honestly the most challenging parts for me are the communication aspects. I'm good at my trade, I'm great at organizing time, but when it comes to handling email, making sure my clients feel taken care of, and managing my marketing and publicity I always feel like I'm coming up short.

Berlin. When Alice is older I plan to move there for a couple of months!

Lots of things, but my most serious goals were artist and orchestra conductor. Others included ballerina, flight attendant (which I did eventually apply to be--rejected), and I always wanted to be a mother.

I am a sole proprietorship, which was an easy decision. When I began I anticipated being a one-woman-show for quite a while (five years later I have two employees) and also didn't want the added tax responsibility of an LLC or Corp. As greater risks and liabilities start to become a reality of my expanding business I will probably change to an LLC.

Yes! We use a cloth diaper service which makes using cloth so easy and low-commitment as far as time goes. When we go out and I don't anticipate being able to find a place to discreetly change her, Alice usually wears a disposable diaper. But doing cloth is great because she learns early the difference between wet and dry and will hopefully make toileting easier in the months to come.

Alice Elfie. It came to me suddenly in the car on the way to a Labor Day party. When I was little I went through a phase when I only wanted to be called Alice and I told everyone my name was Alice. Elfie is a nickname for "Elfriede," a common German name I first heard when I was in Berlin for school. I was equally important to me to have a name that sounded good and looked good on paper, and Alice Elfie works for me.

I always end up happy, so I think my choices have been okay. Who knows what could have been--that is the price you pay to live.

No! I am not a graphic designer. All of my design stuff is done by Eric Downs, owner of Downs Design.

I admit that I have a mental list of acquaintances who I am not likely to invite to a party in my house unless I'm moving furniture out of the way and expecting a mess. Only invite people who respect your home.

Potato chips, apple slices, crackers with cheese, hummus and pita, grapes. I honestly don't snack much because I am too busy. I like meals. However, my mom always is baking and when I visit my parents (a few times each week), I can't help but graze on whatever goodies are sitting on the counter!

We got Turbo in 2007! I can't believe it's been that long already. He still feels like our new pet.

yes! they are pals--she likes to gently pat his fur, and he rolls around on her rug in her room.

I don't consider myself a fashion icon in Omaha and it's not in my plans. My ultimate goal is to use my gifts--entrepreneurship, creativity, communication, persistence, diligence--to bring ideas and resources to help the people in my city. I love to travel, I would go crazy if I couldn't experience other amazing cultures around the world, but I love Omaha. My heart belongs to Omaha.

That sounds like a real nightmare--and I don't get worked up easily. I remember my wedding fondly but I wish I had gotten a chance to eat. The venue was super crowded and I never got a chance to make my way to the vegan buffet! Generally it was a great day and very representative of our "normal." It isn't normal for us to get a limo or have a spa day or create a seating chart or have equal numbers of male and female friends. I just wanted to have a party, not "do wedding."

He's a formerly homeless alley cat--he looks like he might have some Maine Coon in him though. I don't like breeding.
