I've never felt that a f/1.2 lens is worth the cost for how I use the lens. It's a great lens, but don't spend money on stuff that isn't absolutely necessary. ;-)
-
I use the 50mm f/1.4 for most pictures of newborns. Sometimes I'll bust out a macro lens, too.
-
If you're looking for a less expensive alternative to the 24L, grab the 28 f/1.8. It's a great lens for about a third of the cost. The 24 2.8 isn't nearly as good as the 28 1.8.

Wow...that's amazing. thanks for enlightening me.

It's called Understanding Exposure, by Bryan Peterson. It's a great book for someone who wants to learn how to use their camera and make great photographs.
-
I have and use the Canon 28mm 1.8 and absolutely love it. It produces excellent images and can be used on a full frame camera, should you upgrade.
-
"lowest aperture" meaning the lowest aperture number...which is actually the largest aperture. ex. f/1.2 is a larger aperture than f/2.8

I'm glad you got the book and have read it. Read it again, while practicing the different exercises he has in the book. The more you do that, the more it will become habit.
I use all prime lenses, but that's just me. i like the lightweight and the fast, wide apertures. I don't even own a zoom lens. What camera are you shooting with? -

There's no single setting that will do it all. I shoot my camera in Manual (M) mode all the time and setting change, depending on the light. Sometimes I use flash, most of the time I just natural light though. I primarily shoot with a Canon 40D with a 50mm f/1.4 lens or 28mm f/1.8 lens. I edit in photoshop CS3. My in-camera settings are almost always on Faithful picture style with the numbers set to all 0's. Honestly, though, read that book. It will change how you shoot and help you understand when to use which settings.

Hey Daniel. I used to shoot film...mostly landscapes/nature. I haven't shot much film since 2007 but play with a Holga every once in a while...Jonathan is definitely a great source for anything film. That book will help you out either way. Thanks for the compliment. I went to BYU-Hawaii and graduated from there in 2007.
