I remember you having an issue with a lab that was offering motion picture film for still photogs? What was the name of that company? I came across one can wanted to make sure it wasn't the same.

worst lab in the entire world. i sent them 4 rolls of film in oct. it is now the middle of march with no images back.
ponzi scheme and a big one at that. -
what are the main mistakes you see wedding photographers making?
Lack of vision. So many wedding photographers shoot weddings in a way they expect them to be shot. It's like they started out by looking at what other wedding photographers were doing and tried to carbon copy that. There are a million ways to tell a story, but when you look at wedding photographers in general every post is is groundhog day.
I'm not saying I don't do the same, we all do, but it feels like so many wedding photographers completely lack artistic vision.
Shoot it your way. -
best place to get filipino food in charleston? dinner's on me.
Formosa. It's a hole on the wall but it's good eatin'. I'm taking you, Joe and Abegg and whoever else wants to go

Dude, no no no? Does it not seem disrespectful and arrogant towards people who respect your opinion and seek your advice? Some questions might be dumb but we all ask them starting out. And don't answer No! ;)
Me answering no to yes and no questions now and then? Especially after over 3000 questions answered. Do I think that is arrogant?
No. -
any favorite family photographers?
Jenny Jimenez & Jonathan Canlas immediately come to mind.

Hey. Just wanted to know where you guys get your goodies developed and scanned? I am in Canada and can't seem to find a local lab that can do what RPL promises to be able to do?? You guys work with them?
Here's my beef with so called "pro" labs. They should all do what RPL does if they want professionals who still shoot film regularly to come back to them. What does RPL promise to do that is so magical- take your preferences into account? It would seem to me if you have someone shooting say 60-100 jobs per year on film and you want their business it makes sense have a relationship with them, and thats all that RPL is doing, and I appreciate it as a customer. If the other guys aren't its probably why they are going out of business and RPL is busier than ever.
I tried a local lab here in Georgetown a little over a year ago that all the "pro's" swore was the best around. They were more expensive than RPL and guess what? They had no interest in helping me out, learning what I wanted to do or customizing anything for me. It was, "here's our services, here's the price, a scan is a scan is a scan". I asked lots of questions and no one cared about what I wanted.
I haven't tallied it recently up but my guess is that I have spent $15-20k on lab fees since then, so they probably should have wanted me as a customer. I will tell you this, its been worth every penny for the peace of mind RPL provides. -
Do you get compared to Jose Villa a lot, and if so, does it bother you? I see alot o similarities between the two of you, (you both use film, shoot with Contax's, develop at Richard's, both have Hispanic origins and your styles are so freakin beautiful).
Ha. I can assure you no one is mistaking me or anyone else for Jose Villa. He is probably the most well known wedding photographer on the planet right now, whereas I am a guy who is still very much learning how to get better at every wedding.
We both like pretty, sunny photos but I don't think there is anything in our Mexican blood making us good photographers :) I am not really on the same playing field as he is, but it would flattering if anyone thinks so. I am just trying to take photos that I love and hopefully other people love them too. So far its working out. -
where do you process your film when you shoot personal work?
I send it all to Richard Photo Lab. They are great at what they do.

how did you like Tacoma?
It could be described like this

Why wouldn't you consider doing wedding photography? I'm just curious :)
it's just not me or my style. there is little that is new to photograph, it's all been done. i love the creative control i get with portraits and fashion photography. plus i can't stand being walked over, my vision has to be heard.

How often, if ever, do you use a light reflector? Your shots of the brides getting ready are beautiful. On the weddings I've shot, the light is never great in the salons or houses. Or do you just convince them to move near a window with natural light?
I never use a reflector and very rarely ask people to move closer to the windows. It's their wedding, not my photo shoot.

when you first started out what would you say the most influential way you advertised was? word of mouth? ads? etc.... and how did you branch out from your local area?
I never advertised until three weeks ago and then I only did it because I got an amazing deal on a full page ad.
Advertising is overrated.
