i print everything on a 4x6 with a 1/8th border. i dont want to give my clients different size photos. and my proof boxes will not fit 4.5x6.
      hope that helps!

i shoot 800 most of the time. i like warmer skin tones and warmer photos. the only time i am shooting 400h is when it is too bright outside and portra 800 does not handle full sun or bright sun well as all. so then i move to 400h (but it is warmer outside, so i am still getting warmer tones with 400h). for window light, you can go either film. 800 is going to be much warmer and much more red. 400h is going to softer and more pastel. the skin tones a bit more washed out. i shoot both, depending on how much sun i am getting in the window and how intense it is.
      hope that helps!

i only rescan the images i need at a larger res. say i am doing an album and it is a 12x12 and i have two pages that have full flushmount images. then i will rescan those images at a higher res and then plop them in the album. i rarely design an album that any images is larger than an 8x10. i do simple layouts with lots of white space. hope that helps!

i gave richards a test job (3 rolls) and i asked them to scan it. then i asked them to rescan them and add majenta, less contrast and then i shoot with a yellow and red film (very warm). and there you go! it is all about communication. also test the nortisu scanner and the frontier and see what on works best for you.

i scan on the frontier. i tried the nortisu for a while but was also having a lot of issues with it. it is terrible in any bright light situations. it is too highlighted and harsh. the frontier is softer all around.
      hope that helps!

i rate it at 400 and then overexpose on the dial a +1 to a +2. this way i am overexposing 2-3 stops total. this film is great overexposed that much! love it.
      good luck!

    15. jill thomas

yes! you have three parts of getting your look ...
      1. the camera
      2. the film
      3. the lab

the film is only one of those parts. it will look different in a different camera, as well as if it is getting processed differently. most labs process that film very flat! try RPL and have them scan on their noritsu scanner and frontier scanner to compare! good luck!

portra 400 - shoot one stop overexposed. this film is great for a underexposed look as well. try it out.
i do both! i rate kodak 800 on the iso dial at 400. then i use the exposer dial at a +1 to a +2. then i can overexpose 1-3 stops. fuji 400h i rate at 400 on the iso dial. then i use the exposer dial at +1 to +2 because this film i only want to overexpose 1-2 stops.
now you will notice my iso dial is always on 400. this is one variable i have taken out and dont have to change. i only change this dial when i start shooting at night with 1600-3200 films!

      hope this helps!

i shoot black and whites the same! (dont shoot into the sun however, like you might do digitally). i overexpose my black and whites one stop. i love kodak 400TX for medium format and fuji neopan 400 for 35mm.

i deliver medium scans. i also give them the negatives, so they have the option of printing larger than an 8x10. i also offer printing services and if they want an elargement print done, they send me back their negatives and i order the print for them and then i send their negs back to them with the print. that easy. no need to scan at a larger res when realistically they will only print ONE of those larger than an 8x10. hope that helps!
