Order of the Phoenix -
Nobody in the wizarding world believe Harry and Dumbledore that Lord Voldy has indeed returned. All think they are both daft and mad, causing the Ministry of Magic to keep a close eye on him. A member from the Ministry is sent to Hogwarts as Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher to ensure that neither Dumbledore nor Harry or anyone else are spreading the news of Voldy's return. Minister of Magic wants to make everyone think they are safe. Since they are not learning how to protect themselves from the real world, a group of students decide to create "Dumbledore's Army", lead by Harry, to teach them dark arts and spells they are NOT learning in school. Harry has a vision (that Voldy planted in his head) that Sirius is in danger at the Ministry and takes a group of people with him to save him. TWAS A TRAP! Death Eaters are there waiting for Harry to collect the Prophecy containing, what Voldy thinks, is crucial info to defeat Harry. Voldemort never hears what it says for the prophecy is smashed. Bellatrix kills Sirius. The whole wizarding world realizes that Voldemort is indeed back and that Harry and Dumbledore were telling the truth all along.
Half-Blood Prince -
Dumbledore decides it is time for Harry to learn crucial information about Voldemorts past in order to defeat him. For it is true that "niether can live while the other survives". (In the end one of them has GOT to go!) So Albus has private lessons with Harry in which they delve into the past memories about Tom Riddle. We discover that the reason why Voldy is still "alive" is because he has split his soul into 7 pieces and hidden the pieces in objects of vaule. So even if one piece is destroyed, he can carry on as long as one piece is still unharmed. His diary from Chamber of Secrets was one of these Horcruxes (pieces of soul) and Harry had already destroyed it. 1 down, 6 to go. Albus destroyed another one hidden inside a ring belonging to the line of Slytherins. They find another in a cave from Riddle's past. Dumbledore and Harry set out to destroy is, greatly weakening Dumbledore. Upon return to the school they find that the Dark Mark has been cast over Hogwarts and find Death Eaters have gotten in with the help of Draco Malfoy. Snape kills Dumbledore and Harry is determined to find the rest of Voldemorts horcruxes and defeat him, once and for all.
