You once called the experience point the "single most destructive game mechanic ever devised". What did you mean by this? Do you believe they cannot be used well in any circumstance?
what the experience point is is a measure of the time the player has invested in the game. its function is to force the player to spend a certain amount of time with the game. games in which experience points are central are generally flagrantly disrespectful of the player's time, and that's the area in which we as game designers have the most to improve.
