Even if every fiber of the story screams yaoi, it will never be!! (I'm the only hater around here)

Those are some webcomics! As for comics what I'm reading currently is Scott Pilgrim (love that) and I also recommend:
      Gogo Monster by Taiyo Matsumoto
      Essex County by Jeff Lemire
      and anything by Inio Asano

I was really sick a week ago and right now I'm away on vacation (Washington D.C.). I'll be back in a couple of days and hopefully have things to posts (especially comic pages) next week!

I can see how it could be seen as one (set-up is spot on), but it isn't written as one haha. The problem is when I first thought of the characters the setting was an all boys school, so all the main characters were guys... this changed though, along with the point of the story, so some really important female roles were put in, but they come in much later sadly. I also think I just draw really pretty guys as a default (I should work on this, it's on my list of things to improve).

Anyway the first chapter is heavy in the slice-of-life-high school-comic, but I hope to change that as the story progresses, revealing more history/motivations for each character and serious plot.

Of course you're creative! Everyone uses references, I use references also, especially if I have no idea what I'm doing. I think it's a good habit, which I should do more often. I'd like to say I don't use references for faces ever becuase I draw them.. all the time (practice practice), but I actually do sometimes, especially if the head is at a weird angle. I tend to use my hands for reference also.

I don't know if I'd call them awesome! I'm sure this isn't a conscious decision, but all my characters reflect some aspect of myself, that has been exaggerated and magnified 100 times. I also "people-watch" in malls, on buses... and take things I find interesting and fit them into characters.

One thing I've learned is that having a really solid history for a character is helpful, becuase it defines how they act in the present, even if their history never makes its way into the main story.

When I run out of ideas, I turn on some music and just draw whatever I happen to feel, without worrying about anatomy, colour, composistion, thinking etc. Also I sometimes like to go to the word of the day on dictionary sites, or flip open a book to a random page, pick a word/sentence and then draw my interpretation of it.

My opinion on post-secondary education (and art) is to do what you really love, even if it means that when you graduate you are going to go a year, 2 years, whatever it takes, working in a job that isn't relevant to art and that you might hate it to pay the bills. But while you are doing that you'll be building a great portfolio that will land you a job or freelance that you will LOVE a lot. I think that's worth it. Building a career in something that is so subjective is difficult, but pays off when you find your niche.

I don't know if this really answered your question. I wish I could solidly tell you a "yes there are many opportunities" or "no there isn't", but I'm unsure of that myself.

I've been drawing forever. I wanted to illustrate children storybooks as a little kid, I would spend a lot of time looking at picture books in the library. Then I wanted to animate, do comics, concept art... It's always been about creating things for people to enjoy in some way.

I got into typography recently when I decided that graphic design was a better career choice then illustration (poor reasoning, I know) and took a degree in it. I never realized that you could create a completely different messages by just manipulating text and line rules. I find that pretty exciting.
