Theoretically, yes. There are rumours amongst the Anthropological community of a tribe who had a shared dreamworld that they all went to at night, and various bits of non-hostile research have found evidence to support lucid dreamers "meeting up". So if we could harness lucidity better, I don't see why it shouldn't be able to become a fully realised alternate reality!

Interesting question. Greatest influences -- as a person, as much as a writer -- would be Roger Zelazny, Robert Anton Wilson, Susan Cooper, H. P. Lovecraft, Tim Powers, William Gibson and Thomas Ligotti. Possibly less formative, but still much beloved include Chuck Palahniuk, Sherri Tepper, James Blaylock, and Steven Erikson.
