There are rumours amongst the Anthropological community of a tribe who had a shared dreamworld that they all went to at night, and various bits of non-hostile research have found evidence to support lucid dreamers "meeting up". So if we could harness lucidity better, I don't see why it shouldn't be able to become a fully realised alternate reality!
