I like A Crack in the Sky by Mark Peter Hughes, the Artemis Fowl series by Eoin Colfer, and the Gregor the Overlander series by Suzanne Collins.

I think the most useful trait a writer can have is the drive for self improvement, and it sounds like you have that already. Also useful is honest self assessment and the ability to take criticism and distill the bits that are accurate and constructive. Once you know your strengths, develop stories that play to them. Once you know your weaknesses, come up with ways to address them--and never stop improving at your craft.

I love the feeling of making a manuscript better, stronger, or more complete. It's like doing a jigsaw puzzle where you're making your own pieces as you go!

I'm currently hard at work on the second book in the Galaxy Games trilogy and having a lot of fun with it.
