im not bored of substance abuse narratives.

i think that there if you're brave enough to try and write about life around you and you are between 15-50 there is a certain responsibility to talk about drugs in your writing. i can think of a massive amount of important experiences in life that i've written about, adapted or will write about that involve substances in use around me. think about how important the white pills and hash eggs were to Leaving the Atocha Station.. someone might say, ugh, another drug narrative, but really you can't understand some of the vital depths of that character without the pills and hash. reality is, in a lot of great characters drugs are a wholly fundamental aspect. it's relevant to write about them because they are more present and more complexly interwoven into society than ever. to understand certain segments (most segments, actually) of North American/European society, you need to write about drugs. without them we are pre-industrial.

      i don't think it's a circle jerk.

i think it's a place where people are friends.

a little party or a weekly gathering place. i think it is a something, a thing being built. it is a collegial project.

there is some industry about it and some commercial as well. but all in all it is a good thing, alt lit. i think it is a group of people who have found each other.

      most of them good people.

they seem generationally connected, mostly 20-30.

they are people who are in love with what the internet does while simultaneously being in love with literature/writing/publishing.

i think it is a place where there isn't a lot of confidence as a whole. there are hateful netizens about us. there are people who will attack something that is wholly creative, innovative.

people want to stake unfair claims in barbaric ways.

this place is sincere, i think, so that sucks.

i think in alt lit there are people doing things that truly are astounding to watch and they are holding on to each other and urging/supporting them to go on, to continue, to cut this shape.

i think you probably feel like you're on the outside of all of this and it's not fair that you're not in it. but have you worked at it? have you worked your ass off? have you worked at anything in a deep way in your life? have you felt agony? probably not. you're probably just 'some kid' who wants to party with people you don't really know. but like, just be cool man.

      don't be a circle, jerk

i was thinking about something like this today. i sometimes don't think that im smart enough to write for thought catalog. im probably one of the stupider writers out there. i should maybe try something though. i feel like it might be "a dream come true" to have a piece published at TC. i need a good topic though. i need a friggin brain fleur.

it's hard to say. i enter into hazes of love with authors. i have been in/ am in love with heather o'neil, roberto bolano, blake butler, tao lin, david foster wallace, richard yates, maragret atwood, xTx, roxane gay... i mean those are big names. there are a few hundred writers with whom i've fucked around with. everything makes me feel good (better) w/r/t writers.

i don't know who i identify with most. i think i love those mentioned above because i identify with all of them; their joys and sadness. i like that there are some writers i love that i can be with semi-physically like blake butler and tao lin and ben loory and xTx through facebook and gchat.

i think the fact that i can read a lot of their work online has been really transformative for me, i feel good about the urges that most people in my real life shun or ignore because of online writers. i feel better about my states.

ah, i guess i don't identify with authors that seem to have no shred of goodness in them. like there is a difference between zachary german and tao lin. their styles are similar but german i think is just a perfectly isolated asshole while tao seems to help others. so i like german's writing to a degree, but i don't identify with him IRL or the characters in his novel because he/they are too emotionally isolated for me to feel anything for.

i'm a really sad and isolated person that generally hates herself but i think that i want to read authors who still have a hope, even if it's lingering, that there is some emotional landscape out there for them to traverse.

i know this makes absolutely no sense and i am wholly unclear. my favorite author is charles dickens. i identify most with xTx.
