      I don't get much of that, but any time I'm not busy I'm spending w/ my family.

      Other than the Bible, probably Bird By Bird has been one of the most influential books I've read because gave me the courage to pursue writing seriously. It was an important book to me at the time I read it.

      I could never choose just one - and thank goodness we don't have to - because I like SO MANY kinds of music! Love everything from classical to adult contemporary to bluegrass to Enya!

      Wow. What a fun question! It would be really cool to go back and meet Jesus. My whole life I've tried to learn what he would do or how he would respond in certain situation, but to actually be able to hang out with him, look Him in the eye, and ask Him questions would be amazing!

      Isaiah 43:1-2...

      Fear not, for I have redeemed you;
      I have called you by your name;
      You are Mine.
      When you pass through the waters, I will be with you;
      And through the rivers, they shall not overflow you.
      When you walk through the fire, you shall not be burned
      Nor shall the flame scorch you."

      Interesting question. First, we can't assume that poverty is the worst thing that can happen to a person. Some of the most joyful, generous people I have ever met had nothing of material value but are happy with their choices and wouldn't have changed a thing. Mother Teresa is one example. Jesus is another.

      So... poverty will always be a part of our world, just as there will always be people who know how to make money. There will always be rich people who choose not to part with it to help meet the needs of those who do not have the same opportunities and advantages.

      There will always be a faction of people for whom riches are not a priority or goal. There will also be a population of people who would flourish and become financially independent if given the right opportunities and support. Finding those situations should be the goal of those for whom making money is easy... mentoring, scholarships, funding small businesses are all ways the rich could help find those situations. Yet the very thing that makes a person long for riches often causes them to hang onto their money rather than risking it on someone without a track record of making money successfully.

      In Heaven, that's the only place where money will not be a problem on either end of the spectrum.

      1. I do a ton of reading (about writing and lots of other stuff, too). That helps broaden my perspective and raises the level of my work.
      2. Do some writing that you won't share anywhere - like a journal - because you really learn dig deeper and be more honest when you're not trying to prep it for the world to read. That work will strengthen the work you choose to share.
      3. Decide on the specific purpose for your writing. Is it to inspire? Or entertain? Or inform? Based on your answer, you'll know a little better where your reading audience might be. For instance, if you're writing to inform then you'll want to consider who you want to read that info -- or who needs to read it!
      4. Getting a Writers Market book will help you know the kinds of periodicals and publications feature the kinds of things you write.
      5. Starting a blog is always a good way to practice and see who shows interest... there's not reason not to! Read successful bloggers' blogs to see what they're doing right and what they recommend.
      6. Network with writers at your church, in your community, join writing groups at a local college or whatever is available... having people read and offer honest feedback is soooo valuable!
      Good luck! It's the best field in the world (in my opinion)!

      I would've been more proactive. Expecting the best from people is fine, but I let myself get taken advantage of. There's a balance, I've learned. Wish I'd learned it earlier.

      I try to find something good in anyplace I go, but I had to work a little harder to enjoy Toledo. Gary, Indiana, isn't especially exciting either, but the surrounding area is lovely. So I try to think about that while driving through Gary. :)

      I'd probably want to host a show like Ryan Seacrest or interview people like Oprah.
