I think having stacks of self belief is important. You'll often get people tell you that you need a certain amount of experience or to have worked for certain people first before you go freelance. But if freelance is what you want, you should just go for it.
Don't be afraid to talk about how brilliant you are.
And (this is my *I wish I'd thought of this sooner* tip) get your head round the tax system as soon as you can. There's loads of things you can claim tax back for at the end of the year but make sure you write everything down and save your receipts!
