      So that the use, and more importantly the modification, of them is controlled by the object that owns them. This avoids the situation where variables get changed out from under code that uses them by some other code. Encapsulation is a foundational concept of object oriented programming.

      But there should be not problem. The business logic of your app should in in code that doesn't know or care that it's part of a web app. Standard BDD/TDD approaches apply. For the front end, you can use Cucumber driving Selenium (or something similar).

      I'm getting out of Rails, and largely Ruby as well, but the RSpec book is about to be printed, and you can get it as an eBook now. That should have all the information you need.

      I can't really say that any music has had an effect that would qualify as life-changing. That said ... "Ghost in the Machine" by The Police was probably the first album that was at all significant to me.
