Both. For different reason. Aperture is what our workflow is built around. It was first out with video support and what we fashioned our process around. We still have LR in the studio, and I use it at home, it's faster, maybe a little easier, cleaner.

The pro res files are kept as work, so there are store as live work until the video is created, then we'll use the media manager in FCP to compact the used files, then the balance of the Pro Res is discarded leaving the finished project, and all of the RAW.

I have a few OWC SSDs personally, I really like the bang for your buck you get from that drive. I'd also say that SSD is not at all a requirement, and you're much better off finding a reliable drive. I've had good experience with the OWC and LaCie units as well as the G-Tech.

2 way sync? Wow, I have no idea. You could certainly set up something like Basecamp and subscribe to the calendars [and Highrise for the contacts] otherwise, I might look into Daylight on the Mac, or Exchange on the PCs, or build it.

For the moment, We're pretty well covered for Servers but when we get to that place again, might need to think about either MacPros or moving to something in the blade family.

Kid-kid? Hardy Boys, all of them. Teen-kid? Orwell, 1984.

I really don't think most photogs would assume that. I think they would assume that if you said you were proficient, that you would be. They [the vast majority anyway] were once starving assistants too, meaning they probably understand that you can't afford to keep current copies of every piece of available software.

First, don't get stuck thinking that there is only one way to handle it. My way would be to be straight ... "Hey Photo, I don't have Capture1, I'm happy to get it if you need me too, but it's a pretty big outlay of cash, so, is there any way we can split the cost." You should NOT bill them for it with out talking to them [unless you never want to work for them again], nor should you be expected to eat the whole purchase [you might end up having too, if they feel like you should already have it]. Your set up does allow you to handle nearly all RAW output, and they are the ones insisting on using something different, you should be able to reach a compromise.

Commercial "Photography", D300S. Want to take video too ... D7K

I once pulled a hard drive out while it was being written to [hooked the cord on the zipper on my sleeve] completely screwed the drive, but that's the point of writing to 2 drives at once ...

I would communicate with your photogs, I would say that it's you responsibility to have a way to process RAWs, but NOT every way. ie, maybe you have Lightroom & Aperture, but not the rest. You're just providing them either with a way to view files, and make RAW adjustments or a way to export other file types. If they insist on using something in particular, just be honest, say you don't have it, and maybe the 2 of you can work something out.

I went to Penn State for first Nuclear Engineering, and ultimately Computer Science.

I didn't. I had known Chase for a long while, I had just left a job when he started looking. Persistence, Good attitude, exceptional skills, and find the answers to problems, before people know that there even are problems ...
A few creative ideas to score a gig [aside from asking, applying] ...
_ Build a mock up of a website, or facebook page, for the person you are hoping to work for [do NOT do it for real, just a mockup] show it to them, knock their socks off.
_ Make a fun video with a cardboard cut of of them, and you doing the digital tech portion ... -
MacBookPro, at least 2TB of your favorite bus-powered hard drives, back up batteries, at least 2 of every cable you could think to need, a gray card [yes really], gaffers, little tool kit, an inverter, wireless mouse [trackpads are pain].

Hmmmmm ... Really? I've been lusting after the Ibis Cyces Hakkalügi [http://www.ibiscycles.com/bikes/hakkalugi/] and the Baron Bicycles Outsider Disc [http://www.baronbicycles.com/bikes/ousider-disc] for a loooong time. Of course I love my current bikes too.

Sure. I was thinking of shaving tonight anyway. Where should I send it?
-
Indeed it is! When there is time, I try to do as much of that as I can, since we try to do nightly editing.
