Mostly jpegs, I used to shoot raw but there isn't a need for such big files. I've printed jpegs 40"x60" before and they do just fine.

Almost never work with masking, mostly curves. Just try to work with the light not against it and if you want the subject to pop up I usually look for something that might look dark enough for the background. Even when it is overcast check where the light is coming from even if it is minimal. I have a reflector that I rarely use but that could also help a lot, especially if you live somewhere where it is often overcast or rainy.
      Hope that helps! :)

I love jenny saville's paintings, her color palette, the size of her paintings, the braveness, the splashes and the topics.
Melissa Rodwell is amazing and has many behind the scenes and fun stuff. Her editorials blow me away.

Also Bruno Ripoche, I have been coming back to his website for days now and can't get enough.

I'm self taught so pretty much learned by trial and error. These days I edit with curves and layers mostly by adjusting every curve individually, creating layers and then adjusting more curves and changing the opacity and sometimes the settings to 'overlay' or 'lighten'. I used to use programs for it but I decided to build my own colors and curves.
My best advice would be ALWAYS work with layers, NEVER save on top of the original (do not touch the original copy) and shoot in RAW.

oh god. yes. there are MANY. and there are even MORE, because of me being a Fine Arts major and a photographer on the side.
Would you mind specifying if you're interested in hearing about my favorite photographers/drawers/painters/installation artists/video artists etc and asking me again? :)

      I've used lenses from 24mm to 28mm, 24-70mm and 28-70mm, 45mm, 90mm, 85mm, 70-200mm, 300mm, 50mm, 18-200mm.
I'm mostly drawn towards fixed lenses though. I like moving myself rather than the lens around the subject. I think 50mm is a classic and a have to have for photographers. 90mm,45mm 85 mm and 28mm are some of my favorites.

Oh thank you dear.I really hope one day it will become my full time job!
I use a Manfrotto 718B. It is small and light very good while traveling. It is the sturdiest tripod I've ever had and it doesn't wobble like everything else I've owned prior to that.

here's some stuff that I mentioned a few months ago :a combination of flickr favorites and a short film,a song, plenty location inspiration, or just my personal emotional state at the moment. I love looking through ads in fashion magazines and any b/w movies from the 30's to 60's. I love the fashion back then and dreams.
It's pretty much the same things now but I think I've been getting a lot of inspiration from movies lately. I've taken a couple of film classes and I most definitely get ideas from there.

You should see my photography bookmarks, it is not even funny.
Here's a blog I go to ever now and then to distract myself from the trending stuff on flickr : http://community.livejournal.com/ruguru/

Let me know if you would like more links because I've got tons, but most of all get out there and be aware of what is happening around you and I guarantee you that you will find inspiration.
      :)
