Go to journalism school.

There are already way too many amateurs in this field (especially on the Internet), and it lowers the quality of work all around. It is *absolutely essential* to get some journalism training.

Either put yourself through a bachelor's program, intern in a real newsroom (not at a blog), or read every journalism book you can get your hands on. This is a surprisingly technical field, and you can be a good writer and a terrible journalist at the same time.

Blogging is not journalism.

Writing about the news is not journalism.

Quitting drinking was something I had tried to do in the past, but I got it to "stick" this time for one simple reason: I decided on a very deep level that I was done, that drinking was not an option for me anymore.

Once I flipped that switch, it was a matter of figuring out and addressing the issues, problems, and everyday situations that made me want to drink in the first place.

For example, I'm shy, so I used to drink heavily when I had a social event to deal with. These days, I go to fewer events, and I manage my anxiety myself. And I hate being bored, so I used to drink any time I felt bored with life/work/etc. Nowadays, I just have to find something to DO!

As far as a support network goes, I didn't go to AA this time around (it hadn't helped much in the past, but that's not the case for everyone). I did, however, make a very public declaration of my intentions about 3 months into my sobriety; from that point forward, I got encouragement from my Internet friends, and I was also held accountable to them and the rest of the world.
