one time i wrote an essay on this for art history...
To begin with a cliché, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Like art it is subjective and unique to each person’s perspective. That being said, in my opinion beauty is something that produces a positive emotion. In this case positive does not necessarily mean happy. It can also include positive feelings like compassion such as when you view a painting created during a particularly terrible time in the artist’s life and share in their pain for a moment, feel for them. This sharing of emotion in itself is beautiful because it shows the commonality between individual and gives me the positive emotion hope.
Beauty can be found in things we are attracted to. If a boy finds a girl beautiful that means he is at least initially attracted to her. If you find a piece of art work beautiful that often means to want to experience it and examine it, taking in every detail. Therefore you are attracted to the painting. The same holds true for a piece of music. If you are compelled to call a piece of music beautiful you are most likely going to listen to it again.
Beauty can be created by anyone including, an artist to a child. It is not technical brilliance that brings about real beauty but how what is being considered makes you feel. Your perspective on something can determine its beauty to you. A poem written during a difficult time in your life can be a horrible reminder of the past or a beautiful reminder of how far you have come. -
