yes! I ink all my journal comics in a cheap sketchbook with a brush and ink,

as for getting them to look nice, I pretty much follow the same steps as the incredible Dustin Harbin describes in this post http://www.dharbin.com/blog/how-i-do-it-scanning/

the most important things are probably scanning at a large size ( I use 600) so when you do the levels you can clear out any grey left from the paper and/or erased pencils, the second thing is doing that threshold step, I didn't know about that for a long time because I thought it would ruin them, but like it says in that post if you have the originals large enough it doesn't matter that thresholding makes them look all bitmap-y

      hopefully that helps :)

Thank you! I won't be at SDCC but I might maybe possibly go to SPX this year for my first con, not really sure though

hmmm I don't know if I ever got that question unfortunately, it's not showing up, but as far as auto-bio and funny and avaliable as books on amazon, the only thing besides Liz Prince is James Kochalka's American Elf series, I guess maybe Jeffrey Brown's comics but usually those are less funny and more heart-wrenching, aside from those I don't know of any on amazon

If you want to go off Amazon Dustin Harbin's Diary Comics are really funny and gorgeously well drawn

oh wait! they probably have Joe Matt's comics on amazon, those are auto-bio and very funny, also Dupey & Berberian's Get a Life is good, it's not really auto-bio but it's slice of life and funny, oh and if they have Julie Doucet's "My New York Diary" or if you go on Drawn and Quarterly's site I'm pretty sure you can find her comic Dirty Plotte which is really really good, half auto-bio half fiction stuff

That's all I can think of from my shelves right now, hopefully some of that helps?

Umm, the simple answer is coffee, once I get enough caffiene I'm ready to start tearing into drawings, but mostly it's just thinking about all the comics I want to make that gets me excited most of the time, because I have so many different ones I want to get done and I know that I just have to start or else they won't get done.

It's been a while since I've not felt like drawing, and I think having something that I'm requiring myself to draw everyday helps a lot with that, sometimes I get frustrated on off days and have to take breaks every once in a while usually checking out tumblr or other sites where I know people are doing cool work that gets me excited about getting back to work.

My main hindrance isn't so much not wanting to draw sometimes or not having the motivation, it's being too easily distracted by internet things and realizing that way too much time has gone by and that I should have gotten to work a long time ago.

Thank you! I don't know if I can marry an anonymous person though, gotta know who I'm marrying :\

    7. Ian Andersen

I like like I draw myself in my comics? Uhhhhh you can probably find a picture of me online if you look around for a while, I know I put one up somewhere so I could get into a Lucy Kinsley comic :)

    8. Ian Andersen

I am thinking about opening up some sort of commission thing, still not sure how I'm going to do it, keep an eye out! :D Super thank you for being interested in this though and helping me be more motivated to actually start instead of just wondering if it's a good idea!

The template I use is just a piece of cardstock (like cheap for printing greeting cards or something, who knows) I ruled out my panels on there (I might have done this digitally first, I think I'm on my third template since they wear out after a while and have just been copying them from the old one so my panels are gradually drifting out of alignment) after I had my panel grid I used an xacto knife to cut out the panels and had my grid that I trace into my journal.

This works really well if you're cheap like me and just use letter size bristol/cardstock that you can pickup at the story because you don't have to waste most of a big sheet of the more expensive larger sized real bristol to get your grid (although I'm sure if you do use a larger size you can probably find something tougher that will hold up longer.

But yeah, my template is just a piece of paper with the panels cut out that I trace, for mini comics I usually trace it and then go over the lines with a straightedge, half because that template is actually a bit flimsier than the journal one and because I'm a little more concerned about those having slightly less wonky borders.

      Hope this helps!

Hey! I don't know that much stuff really since I'm kind of slow at actually looking into these cool things, but I can recommend some stuff I've picked up recently. Snakebomb is good and worth it for the Brandon Graham silkscreen cover alone http://www.snakebombcomix.com/ I also really liked Mickey Zachilli's RAV 2+3 and 4 I really like pretty much everything I've seen of Mickey's work http://mickeyz.org also her Bullshit Frank and Gorrilla Joe mini-comics were cool if you can find them, I got them from http://www.chipsylvania.com/shop/ but they seem to be sold out there now so who knows, also Box Brown is having a sale right now and I really like his Everything Dies books http://everythingdiescomic.com oh and I also recently picked up Gang Bang Bong from Cafe Con Leche I haven't read it yet but it looks gooooood, also Inés and Roi's zines all look really good (I picked up Mitochondria a but I think that is sold out now too) http://cafeconleche.com.mx/tienda.html oh and Lizz Hickey's Danny Jeremy Carol Volume 1 is really really good http://www.lulu.com/product/paperback/volume-1/14931132
That's all I can think of right now :)

Thank you! I draw all of my journal comics in an 8 x 11 sketchbook that opens landscape style, each panel is about a 3.25 inch square (give or take depending on how accurately the template is working on any given day) I also use the same grid but with a third row of panels to make the mini comics on 8.5 x 11 cheap bristol paper. The sketchbook I use is a hardback one made by Cachet, the most recent one is kind of falling apart, I thought the first one was great but have kind of been getting the feeling they haven't been as good, but I can't really be sure.

Hah, I'm not sure where to begin with this, since I have no clue how much attention anyone else is getting, also not sure if you're looking for people posting their original work or art in general. So I guess I'll just look at number of notes.
I guess I'll also just limit this to things I recently ♥ on tumblr because I really have no idea
First I think Daniel Spottswoods' NIX! Comix should have way more notes, he's the author of Disquietville and his journal comics are great too.
      http://nixcomix.tumblr.com
Also Efraim Klein makes great stuff, again, can't really tell I can't even see how many notes his stuff has, but whatever
      http://efraimklein.tumblr.com/
FunnyBoneDrawings does great great stuff that doesn't look like it's getting the ♥ it deserves
      http://funnybonedrawings.tumblr.com
Willey Guillot finds great art and makes great art
      http://wileyguillot.tumblr.com/
And Zack Soto's personal tumblr is excellent and probably should be way way way more popular than it looks going off notes
      http://theesecretvoice.tumblr.com/
The SpicyWings tumblr is also really great everything there is really awesome
I like just about everything they post
      http://spicywings.tumblr.com/

Umm, that's all I'm going through for right now :)

    14. Ian Andersen

I have thought about printing a mini-comic, but right now I don't have all the strips scanned yet so it's still a little ways off, also I have only printed one mini-comic of anything so far and didn't do it the best way so I think I'd want to print a few smaller things before trying something as big as this would be. So I might, maybe, but it wouldn't be for a while.

    15. Ian Andersen

Yeah, but that doesn't mean I don't wish I was in Canada, Houston is too hot and humid my paper gets all sweaty :( But yeah, I think David DeGrand of Heeby Jeeby Comix lives in TX and David McGuire of Gastrophobia is somewhere around the Houston area I'm pretty sure, also my pals Ashley Davis of Once Upon a Pixel (and soon JAILBIRD!!) and fellow Houston daily comicer Josh Anderson (not Andersen) of What Errant Beast. I'm just making a list off the top of my head, should probably find out about more TX based cartoonists, but yeah, I'm surprised there aren't more considering how large the state is, maybe most of us leave for cooler comic friendly climates

Thanks! I've only been to Dallas once, (through a couple times but only stopped once) I had lunch at this awesome Indian place really good curry, I think it was spinach potato? Maybe I should ask my friend that took me there what the name was, but I'm answering this right now so I guess that's not happening.

haha, they're not that big, but my canines are a bit longer than the rest of my teeth, and the two teeth on the sides of my top canines both slope away and accentuate the pointedness of those two. Also I tend to think that if vampires were real they would be much better off with their sharp teeth being in place of the incisors like Max Schreck (the actor, not Christopher Walken's character in Batman Returns) had in Nosferatu, much more convenient than having to put your whole mouth on someone's dirty neck.

    19. Ian Andersen

For all of my comics I do everything with pen and paper, specifically a light blue col-erase pencil (although sometimes I use another when I've put in too much blue to be able to tell which line I wanted) and then ink with a Winsor Newton Series 7 Sable #2 Brush using Yasutomo Black Sumi Ink. But I also draw on the tablet a lot too, I use a Wacom Intuos 4 I think it's the large size.. might be the medium but it's big enough for me, and usually draw in photoshop, but recently I've been learning to draw in flash because it's better for making animations. I've also been trying to learn how to use a dip pen but I don't think I've shared anything I've drawn with it yet. I would like to use the tablet more, but I don't practice with it enough to get over the disconnect between where my hand is and where the line appears to draw as confidently as I could on paper so I have to do all my pencils on paper before I can do any sort of digital inking.

tl;dr Both, but I lean more towards paper and pen

I follow a bunch, I could name try to them all, but most are listed in the links section to the right of my page http://citriccomics.com (although I probably need to update it) I read all of those pretty regularly, most through RSS or twitter notice. But if you were looking for name drops some of my current favorite two I've been checking more frequently recently have been Ryan Pequin's Three Word Phrase http://threewordphrase.com Meredith Gran's Octopus Pie http://octopuspie.com Meredith has a new book out which I think should still be available for pre-order so you should get that if you want some great printed webcomics :)
