Your question would have a different answer for just about everyone who asks it. I don't have any background on your particular guy and unlike women, men are unique and fascinating creatures that can be difficult to generalize. I can, however, say this:
You have to judge a man's sincerity based on his actions, not his words. Unless your ex isn't concerned with consequences, chances are he censors everything he says to you. Even a compliment can be enough to send most women into a pointless fit of blind rage and men will avoid this at all costs. What he's saying is important, but what he's chosen not to say is how he actually feels and would probably upset you. Keep that in mind. Don't rule out his sincerity, but remember that there's more to his opinion.
