sorry for the late reply! other than cheapie pedicures i actually have not had my nails done in Houston--but i have purchased a lot of nail supplies on trips down there.
Sally Beauty is a fave; it's an American chain of beauty supply stores but if you're Canadian it's always a treat!
my sister claims that there's a salon in Houston that Oprah recommended for nail art designs, but we have yet to go there. (and I don't even know the name of it to find on Google..) however, we're going to check it out at Easter so i'll report back then! -
unsure what you mean by "tis youg thing" (it's a young thing? it's your thing?) but no, it's not directly related to my work in that i don't work with any nail polish brands. i do however do a lot of colour trend and forecasting work, and nail polish is a great, low budget way to further explore colours and their popularity.. so that's why i'm obsessed!
-
i actually only have a few Chanel polishes--and like every polish i buy, the Chanel ones are purchased because of the colour. i bought Nouvelle Vague last week (part of the summer collection) and that's the only one from the summer collection i'll buy. in general i don't have many pinks/reds and that's really what the other two shades are.
in my experience, Chanel polishes don't last any longer than other polishes. but! they are a bit of a cult collectors item, so that's why i'll continue to purchase them. -
hi Dallas!!
okay, if you're able to get to the US, or want to buy online... i am dying to get my hands on Orly's Foil FX collection (see: http://www.alllacqueredup.com/2010/02/orly-foil-fx-collection-swatches-review.html)
i also really like China Glaze's Millennium, which is from fall and probably easy to find at a good Trade Secrets. it's super metallic--with a bit of squinting you'd swear you had silver Minx on!
annnnd i think the hexagon silver glitter in Deborah Lippmann's Marquee Moon silver polish is a fun texture play--i haven't tried it on yet though but will next time i'm near a Holts! -
um, i too instantly fell in love with this colour and then was just as instantly annoyed there were no credits.
so you've inspired me to do some research!
the bottle is either Chanel or Essie.
ASSUMING they're only styling new polish shades (some magazines don't, but Fashion has a pretty good track record of showcasing new polishes...) my best guess is Essie's Van D'Go from the Art of Spring collection.
...but some swatches seem to place Van D'Go as more pink than the creamy dusty terra cotta shade that's captured in the Fashion pic--this could just be colour balancing though! maybe @xoxSNP can track down the answer... -
i tend to think my skintone slants towards slightly olive (which probably doesn't show up in pictures but i do buy makeup with s slight olive tone..) can you tell my what types of colours make your hands look dirty?
sometimes it's the actual type of polish that can lead to this dirty look (i can't wear polishes that are super opaque with a white base, like Essie's Mint Candy Apple, for instance)
try some bright jelly polishes--jelly polishes dry more translucent, so they're less harsh against your skin. (zoya and orly do a lot of jellies, the latter isn't available in canada though. also, good list here: http://polishaddict.com/category/jelly/ )
i've also had a lot of luck with blue and green shades--yellow tones seem to be the most problematic against olive skin. do you have friends who also like polish? get together for a manicure night and test out a whole range of colours--this is the best way to find a new, more adventurous colour.
(also, drugstores aren't really cool with this, but discretely swatch polishes in the aisle before you buy. i've avoided a few huge mistakes this way!) -
- nail polish! i always feel, er, polished when i have a perfect manicure. i hate chipped polish and always instantly remove it, i think it looks sloppy and always makes me fidget and that never looks pretty...
- wearing heels and/or dresses. i work in a rather business-casual office, so it's easy to get away with jeans/leggings every day... but there are days when i just feel so much.. better in a dress or heels.
- phone calls with certain friends. there's some lovely people in my life who can instantly boost my mood after a quick conversation. also! just smile more (people who complain about always being told to smile should really just stop complaining and SMILE. power of positive thinking!)
- and! match your undergarments accordingly. choosing fun, brightly-coloured underwears in the morning is the easiest way to up my mood for the day. and, happy moods always make me feel pretty!
hope this helps! -
spectacular! because while those... >30 days may seem like a lot right now, they will seem like a lot more when baby is all grown up and talks about how non-spectacular the nanny was! (or! is there the potential for you to give both a trial run day and see how it works out?)
-
nudes and taupes and creams and barely-there shades--it's just so much easier to wear these colours with a tan! nude shades of nail polish are going to continue to get popular (check your fashion magazines!) and, well, i am still obsessed with coral and not just because it's in my hair.
-
not enough crafty things lately! (unless nail polish projects count, but i don't think they do.)
things i have purchased craft supplies for but have yet to complete include: beads to embroider-bead on a dress, many feathers and fabrics for headpieces, gemstones and ribbon to make Glamourai-inspired wrist corsages, and one of my mom's old Working Girl-esque blazers that i want to turn into a vest...
sigh. one day!
oh, and about three pieces of furniture i've been meaning to refinish. -
i have wanted to answer this for so long but keep getting stuck. because my favourite book keeps changing (i want to say Glamorama, but maybe also Less Than Zero... or American Psycho... and oh! Rules of Attraction! see.. cannot choose.) and then, part two: i'd play casting director for Glamourama because i still dream of the day Roger Avary will finally make the film. and, because Ellis keeps the same characters in all his novels, it only works to have any reoccurring characters played by the same actors. Kip Pardue as Victor, Shannyn Sossamon as Lauren, etc etc. i then i get stuck on who to cast as Alison Poole and avoid answering this question for another week! hah!
-
most likely... but moreso i don't want to be one of those girls who just talks and talks and talks about wanting to get married.
-
such a harsh word! and um, no... no one's ever told me we were enemies.
-
not.. really. because in order to care about the people you're asking questions of, you need to know a bit about them--and twitter allows for this!
-
i find that a lot of smaller, independent one-stop-shop salons (like in malls... TTC concourse levels... etc) sell the big polish brands at great prices (or deals, like 2-for-1) and i generally go into any store with a polish display just to see what stock they have.
China Glaze is harder to find--only a few Trade Secrets even carry it. i order mine from transdesign.com or get it when i'm in the USA--it's much cheaper and easier to find polish there! -
yes! the group of people i keep near and dear includes friends i made in JK, high school, and university... as well as summer camp girls! (which i think should count as "school".)
-
virtually? through blogs we were both writing while being university students at Western.
in real life? after we both moved back/to Toronto just about all of our mutual friends kept saying we should be friends. then we kept not running into each other at the same parties. so, we set a date and met for drinks/gossip at Cocktail Moltov (the bar that became Black Hoof) and... ta da! -
flying to Europe to meet Terra? in Paris? Rome? Budapest? one of the above?
-
the old blog was popular because it was about the over-indulgent life of a single university girl. then i graduated, moved home, got a boyfriend, got a job and... quickly discovered that my readers cared for none of it. and while i do like to write for myself, that blog existed because of its audience--it got me some press, a little stint on MTV, some other crazy opportunities that are still kicking around today, some free things, a lot of friends, and my boyfriend too, actually...
but! it was really just time to move on and make a new site to reflect this next stage in my life.
(also! before the old blog there was a livejournal, before the livejournal there was an online diary, before that there was something else--always catering its content to the audience of each medium and always only existing around a partic stage of my life.)
