That's hard! I love lavender because it smells so wonderful and I love its texture- both in the garden and in the tactile sense. It is rather hard to grow in my humid climate; I end up replacing my plants ever other year.

There are some "famous" potters in Mississippi- Lee and Pup McCarty. Before we married, my husband and I took a trip to their studio in the Delta and I bought a few small beautiful bright blue pieces- a tiny creamer, a sugar bowl, and a square blue plate. When we married, we got A LOT of McCarty. We knew we were moving from MS and I didn't have any job prospects, so I decided to try pottery. When we came back to Memphis in 2000 (we both grew up here), I took a class, bought a used kiln, and started firing the work I made at a community center. I looked for an apprenticeship but was advised to buy a wheel and just start. So I did. And I have to say that it is the best thing I've ever done.

at an internship at Reynolda House Museum in Winston Salem. Ellen is who I want to be when I grow up. Polished, unflappable, caring, smart. I still look up to her, even though I haven't seen her in 8 years.
