jenn here: i think i can speak for both josh and myself when i say it's one of the best jobs on this earth if you're obsessed with books. contrary to popular perception, you don't get to sit around and read all day, but you DO get to talk about books all day. like any job, it has its highs and lows, but for me it's got far more highs.

This is a great question that I will do my best to tackle (Jenn here). While I don't want to speak for publishers, I think it's a safe bet to say that both booksellers and publishers do think of certain books as appealing more towards women than men. Jodie Picoult and Jennifer Weiner are great examples of this -- no one really expects the average guy to wander through fiction and pick up one of their books. I'm not positive that it works the other way, though. One of the things kids' booksellers often say is that girls will read "boy" books, but boys won't read "girl" books. I'd say the same is probably true for adults.
All of that being said, I think it's rare for a store to have a "chick lit" section these days (something that I know a few bookstores did have back in the early 2000s), so hopefully there is more ... shall we call it shelving equality? And, in fact, we are planning a podcast about what guys read and why -- so hopefully that will explore some of this as well!
