I was a MORON when I bought my first pro camera. I went straight from a film rebel -- with kit lenses -- and spent $4000+ on a Canon 1DMarkIIN (at the time, the best Canon available). I thought "what's the best CAMERA?" and figured that's what I should buy. I SHOULD have bought a 20D or a 5D and spent the rest of the money on more important gear. By the time I shot my first pro wedding (paid wedding), I had purchased a 24-70 and a 70-200 (f/2.8 lenses) -- but when I bought the 1 series camera, I was using the kit lenses from my film rebel for a while.
Keep in mind, this was at a time when I thought that shooting manual meant shooting manual focus ;) -
You know, I can't say for sure as I've never used the 50 f/1.4. However, I can tell you that I assumed that they weren't THAT different -- and then Cindy (of Orange Turtle) borrowed my 50L and told me how the 50L was significantly superior to her 50 f/1.4. So I still don't know from experience ;)
However, my hunch is that if I were shooting with the 50 f/1.4, not much would be different with my final product :)

I was pretty skeptical the whole way. I knew early on that I could make SOME money doing photography, but could I do it full time, supporting a family? That took me a while to feel like I could pull that off. I think once I realized that people were willing to pay me more than they do a plastic surgeon, that's when I figured I'm in the clear. That was my actual train of thought, by the way ;)

Original chicken sandwich meal, no pickle, value sized, sweet tea. Then I usually go and get an additional large order of waffle fries. Then I usually get a chocolate shake. Yeah, I have a problem :)

Buy a fast prime. A used 50mm f/1.4 usually goes for under $300 :)

Honey shrimp, no garnish (even the rice sticks), pay a couple bucks for extra shrimp, brown rice. I think I just found what I'm eating for lunch!

If it's Chick-fil-a, chocolate shake. Have you ever had one of those?! Best shakes ever.
Cake batter from Cold Stone is probably my favorite thing ever -- that's sort of vanilla, right? -
If I got a nickel for every time I heard that...
