i don't quite understand the question...do you mean excusing greek philosophers who talk about suffering and then when it happens in our lives or do you mean greek society and the rippling effect on the rest of the world of their country's destabilization...or am i completely missing the point entirely lol

ok so bertrand russell was a naturalist and naturalists believe there really is no “good and evil.” Evil is relative and just a matter of subjective preference.
To a naturalist, transcendent evil doesn't exist; the universe just happens to be the way it is. Millions of orphans die in Africa, people live in a slum and die in a gutter, sex slaves are bought and sold in East Asia and all of this is just part of the way things are. They are not transcendentally good or bad or right or wrong. These occurrences are really no different than the death of billions of microbes or the diffusion of ink through a glass of water. Human beings may find suffering sad and tragic, but when every human being is extinct, the uncaring universe will roll on just as before, completely indifferent to all of our pain and misery. Naturalism doesn't even grant us the courtesy of a basis for our outrage. Shaking our fist at the suffering is no different than shaking our fist at happiness.

Aquinas argues that it is true that God created everything, but evil is not a thing. Now of course Aquinas is not suggesting that evil is not real, rather he is arguing that it is not a substance. That is, it does not exist in-itself, but only as inhering in a good substance. Without a good substance there could be no evil. This is the traditional Augustinian move that evil is a privation.

If I get one question asked on this, estaticness will follow. Also I enjoy making up new words.
