The Collector by John Fowles. It's the only book I've ever read where I absolutely had to know what happened next. I think it's brilliant the way it plays with the sympathies and loyalties of the reader. I'm a fan of the movie too but Terrence Stamp was a poor casting choice for Freddie Clegg because he gives me stockholm syndrome.
