I've only made fake commercials, but I'd be interested in making the right kind of real ones, absolutely.

I think he, like most actors, can only flourish in roles that are fairly close to their actual persona. Robert DeNiro is pretty stilted and awkward when he plays anything but a quietly sociopathic loner, but when he gets the right role he knocks it out of the park. So too with Colin Farrell. I think he had the benefit of being discovered by a few big directors, then had a look and attitude that fit the zeigeist and the trends in leading men. This was to his detriment. I don't think he's particularly charming without good dialogue, and he's not that handsome, so in roles like Alexander he's bad. However, he plays smooth-talking, hard-living men on the edge well, and so in certain roles he performs well. I think his career is hitting a point where he's getting the right kind of roles, things like In Bruges and (hopefully) Imaginarium will be right for him. He's a lot like Jack Nicholson to me, where I think he'll keep getting better as he ages (though Jack had a much better start, as he was in the best movies of the 70s).

Ali. Don't get me wrong, it's still a quality film, but for a figure as enigmatic and entertaining as Ali was, there's no reason this shouldn't have been a more entertaining film. It's too long, and the pacing just doesn't have enough energy. I still love how it's shot, and the performances are fantastic. I just wish it was better. Close runner-up: Public Enemies.

I can't pick just one, but I'm primarily interested in action, thrillers, and comedies.

If I'm interpreting this correctly, then I will tell you that I stepped in dogshit about four weeks ago on the west side.

That it is actually a wonderful place to live. LA gets hated on so frequently, especially by those who move here, that I used to wonder if anyone actually enjoyed living here. I for one love it. Beyond that, my favorite place to go explore in LA is the area around the LA river on the east side of downtown.

Books: The Secret History, The Art of the Heist, and The House of Meetings
Graphic Novels: Sadly I'm not well versed on graphic novels. I'd appreciate some recommendations however!
Film: In current release, I'd say Avatar, A Serious Man, and, if you can find it, The Hurt Locker.
Restaurants: In L.A., Little Tony's in North Hollywood, Luna Park on La Brea & Wilshire, and Campanile on La Brea ($$$$ but soooo good).

I squeezed a good amount of titties in 2009, but I plan to only be squeezing one pair from here on out. I mean, unless life somehow leads to me being a doctor who performs mammograms or something.

I like to think this was actually left by the real Dane Cook.

When it comes out! Or when we finally have a screening in LA. Or if you want to come over to my house, I have it on DVD.

The producers of the movie originally brought me in to make a quick miniDV horror film for between $60,000-$80,000. They had seen a short film I did in 2005 called "Donut Run" and decided I could make a relatively good looking film for cheap (which I can), and so their idea was to pump out something crappy, sell it for a profit, and use that money to help build capital for a Western that one of them was going to direct. Needless to say, it didn't work out that way. The movie I was brought in to direct kept getting bigger and more complicated, and eventually pushed aside the western and became the main project they were going to pursue. To their credit, they kept me on as director.

As for the screenplay, the best answer is "kind of." We developed the script in house (the writer was also a co-producer and stars in the movie as Dobbs) and so I was a part of the story building process. Then, once there was a first draft, I took a pass at the script and changed a lot of things. Most of my changes were discarded by the producers, so the script we shot was mostly the original writer's version. Then, after three of the producers left the project, I and the executive producer wrote a new 30+ pages of script and built a new story around the original movie. We shot that script a year later on the same rig. So the final movie is the product of some of my writing, yes, but I declined to take any screenplay or story credit in the final film.

Tom Hanks, obviously. Tom Hanks could take anyone, because no one on earth would dare hit that man. He's just too nice, it's like the ultimate guy-with-glasses effect.
