Where that runs into trouble is where the government or a powerful corporation deliberatly chooses to lie to take some advantage which it the public may not otherwise have allowed. This is compounded in countries where "free speech" is protected, which is really just freedom for private media to propagate the lies favoured by their directors.

It took the internet community to send the Kony video viral and then expose it as a right-wing publicity stunt. People are still as gullable as ever, but we now turn these sorts of things around in hours instead of weeks or months.
