Are you looking for a Point & shoot or DSLR? If you are aware about the concepts like AV, Shutter, Exposure etc and serious about photography then go for DSLR. In pt & shoot there is a wide variety but go for a camera which will have atleast 10x optical zoom.

In DSLR, i own Canon 550D which is extremely good, in the market since many years and many of my friends use it. I will definately recommend it which costs around 35k. In Nikon D3000 & D5000 are also equally good options. Read reviews and see which one appeals you.

I am Canon man.. so my choice is Canon 550D
