Usually, applications for RA are available in the spring semester and you have to go through an intense interview process as well, where Res Life will consider factors such as your GPA, your involvement in school-related functions, your dedication, positive attitude, and being an involved member of the SMC community. You can only start applying for RA positions going into your sophomore year and being chosen as an RA would also replace any work study job that you had.
If you're interested, the process of becoming an RA can be found here: http://www.smcvt.edu/studentlife/office/ra_selection.asp
Good luck :) -
Yes, it is so true!! Marci and I, when we came to SMC, where the only girl First Year bloggers at the time. I was so nervous because I loved reading the blogs as a prospective student. When we had our first blogger meeting, Marci came in a little later and immediately shook my hand and said, "HI I'M MARCI!!" with a huge smile and then later on, sent me the nicest message about being excited to blog together and exchanging numbers. Two years later, she's one of my best friends in the world and I really don't know what I would do without her. She is just the best, makes me laugh hysterically, and is always there for me no matter what, so I'm really lucky I met her that day in Hoehl (SMC Admissions building :)
In regards to being interested in blogging, that is SO terrific!! I can totally understand how you feel, since I was in your shoes. I wanted to fit in with the SMC bloggers. To tell you the truth, I think I was even a little starstruck meeting Gabbi Hall, whose blog I read religiously during my senior year, and it's funny because now were friends and she is our wonderful SMC Blogs leader. The SMC Blogs team is something phenomenal to be a part of!! Not only are you learning about how to connect to prospective students via social media, you're also connecting with your fellow bloggers on how to best provide you're unique experiences to these students and families. Everyone is absolutely terrific and accepting, in general just a team I'm so lucky to be a part of :)
If you're interested in becoming a blogger, I would definitely contact Gabbi Hall, our Online Media and Comunications Coordinator at ghall@mail.smcvt.edu for more information!! Hope to see you on the team :) -
Sure I can!! So, I was a blogger before I was a tour guide. I was actually approached by my admissions counselor who ran the SMC blogs program at the time if I was interested in doing it, so of course I said yes!! Being a blogger coming into SMC was phenomenal because it helped me out so much with learning about SMC. You usually go through a one month preliminary trial of blogging and utilizing social media and then will hear back. Connecting with prospective students and families through social media outlets in general via blogger, twitter, formspring, facebook, etc. We also put on Knight Chats throughout the year, where prospective students and parents can have their questions answered by the bloggers. Blogging definitely helped me to be prepared for becoming a tour guide. Usually around February or March, tour guide applications will be available. You do go through an interview process as well and then will receive a response within a week. Tour guiding is wonderful because I get to meet students and families and speak to them one on one and show them around the beautiful SMC campus, whether it be during a weekly and weekend tours or during big open houses. I could not have asked for two better jobs- both of them allow me to connect with prospective students and families and help them to get a glimpse into why I love SMC and I hope they will too :)
If you're interested in blogging, I would definitely talk to Gabbi Hall, our Online Media and Communications Coordinator at ghall@mail.smcvt.edu. If you want to learn more about the tour guide process, I would also talk to Marci Wood, our Tour Guide Coordinator, at mwood3@mail.smcvt.edu. Good luck!! -
No problem!! The fine details will be in your New Student Guide, but basically it's two parts- a preliminary one on the Internet which is multiple choice which focuses on literacy and translation and then an essay where they'll give you a topic (mine was write about your best friend) and you put in as much proper grammar and conjugation to show what you know on registration day. If you've taken something like Latin as your language for high school, you take a SAT II of it. It's not something too hard at all, SMC just to see where you would place level wise if you did choose to take this language in college, so just do you're best and it'll go great- good luck :)

You'll be signing up for classes in July, during one of the pre-registration days, which you'll learn more about when you receive your New Student Guide :)
-
Great question!! The New Student Guide should be sent sometime in the summer (probably June or July) and it has all the information and forms you'll need as an incoming first year in the fall. So, things such as your roommate form, health form, pre-orientation and registration day you want to attend in July etc. that you'll need to fill out and send back to SMC by the date listed and then FAQ's that are typically asked, like about housing, banks in the area, and pre-orientation weekends will all be in there as well. I'm a Sophomore, soon to be Junior (which I cannot still believe!!) and I still have my Student Guide. Overall, it is just one of the many great things SMC gives you in your four years here and really helps you to have information you may need about SMC :)

Hahahaha my P-Day was great, thanks!! Definitely had so much fun with all of my friends and with all the terrific food, inflatables, midknight breakfast, and our very own Kit Rivers as comedian for the night, it just makes me realize how lucky I am to be at SMC. I'll hopefully have a blog post up soon with pictures so you can hear all about it :)

Of course you could have your Spanish teacher write your recommendation letter!! It's so funny that you mention it because one of my recommendation letters was written by my high school Spanish teacher too!! In my opinion, if you have a great relationship with a teacher and they can represent who you are as a student and all your great qualities to colleges, then I think whatever subject they teach you should absolutely ask them to write a recommendation letter for you :) Aww that is so amazing to hear you want to go to SMC- I wish you the best of luck and hope to see you on campus in the future!!

I'd have to say all of the sports are pretty popular for games since SMC has such terrific school spirit. However, I'd have to say probably the biggest student section is for basketball, hockey, rugby, and soccer. In those sports, you literally see a rainbow of purple and gold with big signs and loud screams and shouts. I even have my special purple and gold eye shadow I wear to the games!! Overall, I think whatever game you're interested in or want to go to, there will always be fellow purple knights there beside you to cheer the teams on :)

I think it's a tie between Adolescent Development and Behavioral Neuroscience. Both have definitely challenged me greatly, but in a way that has helped me to become a better student. I've always wanted to pursue adolescent psychology, so taking this class helped me to not only reflect on adolescence as a whole, but on my adolescence and the changes that I experienced. Professor Kuntz was amazing and really opened up a circle for trust and respect that appreciated so much. Behavioral Neuro has allowed me to touch a human brain, perform an EEG and lie detector test and learn about how everything is somehow related to the brain. Professor Tomasulo is an amazing teacher who really cares about her students and is always sharing fun facts of the day with us, which helps start the day right :) Overall, all of my Psych classes have been amazing and I'm really lucky to be a part of such a terrific major.

Absolutely they do!! It is so easy to get into Burlington, mainly because our Knight Cards allow us free busing on any CCTA bus, so you'll always see many SMC students in Burlington, especially on the weekends, because of this. The #2 Essex Junction bus, which is the one that stops right in front of campus, takes us straight to Church Street, aka my favorite place to shop and eat :) The last bus on week days is usually 10 and on weekends it's 12, so it's really convenient as well!! Here is the link to the bus schedule if you want to check it out :) http://www.cctaride.org/pdf/Current%20Web%20Schedules/Feb2012/2.pdf

Sure you can!! You can go in 10 times if you wanted to and you wouldn't be charged extra, since our unlimited plan is included in our board. Usually, I go in for lunch and dinner and then go in before class to fill my coffee mug. So, basically, you won't be paying for a separate meal plan, meals per week, or anything like that. Go in as many times as you want and enjoy :)

Aww I'm so glad I could help!! If you have anymore questions, feel free to ask :)
-
Oh what an awesome question!! The Knight Card... well, it's kind of like our everything as a SMC student!! So, the knight card is your id- it gets you into any building that has a card sensor (until 11 and then it's just your building) it is swiped for our unlimited meal plan into Alliot and it allows us free busing on any CCTA bus, it is like our library card when you want to check things out from the library or LLRC, and is it like a debit card, where you put money in your Knight Card account, either online or at our Knight Card office on the 2nd floor of Alliot so you can do laundry and buy things at our two cafes and vending machines. You can also use your knight card debit outside of campus at any participating restaurants or shops as well.
The Knight Card is truly amazing and offers so many things, so hope this answers your question :) -
It really depends actually- if you're in the engineering major, SMC and UVM have a program where you take half of your classes at SMC and the other half at the engineering lab at UVM. However, I'm not really sure about other subjects and how easy it is to take classes there. I'd actually email David Barrowclough, our assistant registrar, to find out more about your options about taking classes at UVM during the semester at dbarrowclough@smcvt.edu- good luck :)

YES I DO!!! Since 5th grade!!

Financial aid should be sending your information package in the next week or so if you just got your acceptance last week. If you don't receive anything from them in that time, I would definitely call them at 802.654.2591 to just make sure it's been sent. Congratulations of your acceptance and good luck!!
-
It's pretty easy!! Basically when you send in your confirmation and deposit to SMC, they send you something called a "New Student Guide" which is all the information you'll need and any forms you need to fill out. One of which is the roommate survey!! It's really thorough, asking you questions like, "Do you take showers at night or in the morning? Do you like background music or quiet when you sleep? Are you cluttered, messy, or clean?" etc. Res Life does a great job of matching people up with compatible roommates- my freshman year roommate and I are still very close and it was a good match!!
However, let's say you form a connection at an Open house or on the Class of 2016 facebook page and you really want them to be your roommate, you can request them on the roommate form as well- good luck :) -
Aww that is totally understandable!! This is definitely the hard part of the college process, even in my opinion harder than filling out the Common App, getting recommendations, writing your college essay etc. It's deciding where you're going to call home for the next four years- where you'll meet different people, live on your own for the first time, and experience so many new things. It's a huge decision and something that you really need to think and research long and hard about. The selling point for me about SMC was definitely the family feel on campus. I was just like you, totally undecided and not knowing which was the place I wanted to be. I went to the open houses of my top 4 schools and when I went to SMC on a rainy cold day in March- I just knew it was the place for me!! The friendly students and professors, the make yourself at home feeling, amazing opportunities for growth as a student, friend, and leader- I couldn't beat it. Two years later, I have never regretted my choice- SMC is my second home and family and I love it. So find where you get that "feeling" that this is it for you and no matter where you choose, I hope you love wherever you go as much as I love SMC- good luck :)
